Canada now allows the Census to be done online. I tried to login and got the current version of the browser not supported error. It recommended using Firefox, Mozilla, IE, Netscape, or Safari (also mentioning to use JRE > 1.4.x). Funny, I was using Firefox. So, next I tried Mozilla Suite, then Seamonkey, then Opera. No good. BTW, I am running JRE 1.5.0_06.
Time to call the help line (going to try to submit a bug report to the poor call centre =). Well, big lineup, I stayed on the line since I wasn't going anywhere. It did recommend me to phone back at non peak hours and gave some times. 1st problem, it didn't give time zones with the times. Canada has enough timezones that that can be slight problem. Staying on the line ...
After what seemed to be 30 mins, I got to speak to a rep. I mentioned my browser wasn't supported, he said I could download Firefox, etc. I said I tried that. Asked what my OS was. Linux. There followed some Ums and Ahs. Paper shuffling. Well it supports Windows and and and Um. NEways, I held for a moment while he found the supported OS lists. When he got back, he started asking about browsers, so I listed what I had tried and my Java version. Again the question what OS? Linux - Fedora Core 5. Oh, that's the problem. It supports the majority of Windows version and Mac. Okay, thanks.
What could have saved me a heap of time? Well, the browser detection could have used some novice JavaScript to detect my OS version and say NAE, you aren't supported. Instead there's code to say your browser isn't supported so go download a supported browser which is the very one you are using right now.
What is the point of advising people to use multi-platform browsers and basing it on Java which is also multi-platform, yet only have it work with Windows and Mac? Why has every other Gov't Ca. website I have been to work with Firefox and Mozilla?
The Census is to find out who I am, and put me in the Stats. Thankfully, when I finish filling out my paper Census, I will be able to fill in Comments section, submit some bug reports and give them a freebee stat that isn't in the questionnaire: I am one of the Canadians whom doesn't have Mac or Windows on his computer.

Can't you just fake the UA? That's where they probably get the OS info from, unless they're portscanning you or something.

NewsForge posted an article on this today. Apparently Revenue Canada and ePass are affected too. Even worse with ePass because Mozilla based aren't even recommended for Windows.

I sent my Vancouver MP an email a few mins ago with some details about the situation. She works down the street from where I live, if we don't get progress, I can always drop in =)

What would have saved even more time is using a standard html 4.01 compliant form and not used any java or javascript so that the page would just work. What the heck are they using java for anyway?

I did some forensic analysis after Googling for the website.
They check for browser spoofing and the specifically only support browser that match these strings :
Win (netscape|firefox|Microsoft)
Mac (safari)
It appears they do not even support Netscape, Firefox or Explorer on Macs.
If you want to check the script yourself : wget http://www50.statcan.ca/census2006/js/browserCheck.js
The reason for what they support appears to be :
"// Check if the browser version is supported by Entrust TruePass"
But if you check Entrusts web site they do support Linux.

It is actually their script is not allowing you, but not for any compatibility reasons.

Because they are not using this script to deny you access.

I tried the site using Firefox with no luck. So then I tried the site using Konqueror. I changed the browser identification to explorer 6.0 on Windows XP - Tools, change browser identification. Doing this I was able to get into the site.
The site is running on a Windows server. This was apparent from a number of timeouts that put up IIS's default message of contact microsoft. The system is also very slow.
There is no excuse for developing such a poor site. Not just the restrictions, but also the poor performance.
I'm going to send them an e-mail.

Hey, it is the government. They have fallen into the MS is the best trap. :)
BTW, thanks for the tip.
I would rather send in the snail mail version with a nice comment page attached. This will have a double impact as they now have to pay someone to enter the data that they wanted me to enter.

it's not like i want to drag this thread out any longer, but i'm pretty sure you can see the problem here:

What do you expect. The government will not hire quality technical staff, since they have quotas and have had special interest groups to satisfy. Jobs certainly do not go to the best qualified people. I applied a few times over the last couple decades and each time was told I would not qualify because I am not in a demographic that is required to fill the position. Apparently discrimination is allowed if you are an educated experienced white male with no visible disability. It also seems that the people who do meet the demographic conditions, know they can't be fired so are allowed to do a crummy job and get away with it.

I hope you are being sarcastic.
It probably is called Affirmative Action here in Canada. I am in fact being discriminated on by race and sex. I graduated from college with honours, after two years of work experience I was told I need not submit an application, because there were no openings for young white males. I submitted the application, and never got a response. I tried again a couple more times over the last couple decades, but was more eloquently told I would not qualify for reasons other than qualifications. I met a guy who got one of the jobs last year when he volunteered at a music festival where I was also volunteering. I did not feel any better, about the selection process after talking with him and seeing the job he did as a volunteer setting up his part of the network. I was glad that, although he spent a lot of time working during the festival, I did not have any problems, and was able to enjoy my time. All I ended up having to do was setup, testing and tear down, but I still checked in a few times to make sure everything was OK.
I don't judge people by how they look, but by their qualifications. We have hired technical staff from many demographic groups, the only things we require are qualifications, and the ability to speak clearly understandable English if customer interaction is a required part of the job.

I am. Definitely. I believe that "affirmative action" has done more to set back blacks from getting the social advancement they deserve than any other single thing government has done since 1964 or so.
I belive that Diane Raggsdale was one of the most racist people on the face of the Earth, the "reverend" Jesse Jackson's statement that it is "impossible for a black man to be a racist" notwithstanding. But the quote is accurate.

Down here they call it "reverse discrimination", which is a misnomer at least. It's just plain discrimination based on race. Discrimination based on sex may or may not make sense. There are some jobs which women who may become pregnant just should not do.

Yep. It's governmental sponsored racism, just like the Jim Crow laws were.

Makes too much sense.

I'd say, it depends on how bad you want to access that site ;-) I'm not a Canadian citizen but wanted to access it bad enough. Only took me ~30 secs., as my Firefox is already configured for such situations. If I were a Canadian citizen, I'd contact the HNIC at Xandros (a Canadian based Linux distro mind you) & get their opinion on not being able to access a Canadian gov't site with their operating system. Sound like a plan to you? BTW, I believe "Peanut Linux" is also a Canadian distro ;-)

The government of Canada does not seem to care that other browsers and OS's are out there. After my experience a few years ago efiling my taxes with revenue Canada I will not use a Federal Government web site, if for some reason your configuration does not meet their preconceived rules you are out of luck. I am still chasing a tax refund from 2002. The simple solution in this case is use the paper process and any question you don't think they really need to know the answer give them any answer such to one question of how many bathrooms in my house. A number like 95 works. About all you really need to give them is your name and date of birth.

Interesting new development. I am now able to use Linux/Firefox to get into the Census. Without hacking the browser to do it. Currently doing, will finish the email after I am done to tell you how it turned out.
- If you get the "unresponsive script," just click continue.
The comments text area is limited. On paper I would have written smaller to get more in. I ended up using symbols "&" and dropping some apostrophes. I didn't get to say all, but I ended saying Support Linux pls!
What was different about my setup from last time.
- First attempt: FC5, FC5 based Firefox/Seamonkey/Mozilla and official Opera, official Java - This attempt: FC4 and official Firefox, official Java
Did my email to my MP (who is running in the leadership race for the Liberals) make the difference? Maybe they got a lot of phone calls? Or was it that I was using an official build of Firefox instead of a distro compiled RPM?
Well, for anyone who hasn't submitted their paper media and wants to give it a try, I would greatly appreciate feedback on your adventures.
Tomorrow, or the next day I will send and update to my MP and let her know of the status change.
Thanks,
Stephen Mirowski
