That was *difficult* to configure. After using OS/2 Linux, again using, was easy to configure. Except for all of the hardware that was not yet supported. The software that would crash. A KDE version update of almost any kind was a sure disaster. Todays Linux, with a lot of work done by good people is IMO easy to install and configure. Your 'mate' should get the LIVE-CD. An example was one time when I was puzzled as to why someone's old box couldn't boot off a CD. I had carefully set the BIOS boot order so it boots from the CD first. But it wasn't booting. I replaced the IE cable. Same story. The answer dawned on me -- the drive was so old, it was expecting a 500 Mb capacity CD. I was using a 650 Mb CD. I replaced the drive and presto, the system suddenly booted from CD. I haven't checked into DVDs specifically because the issue hasn't come up with any of my customers yet, but often replacing the drive cable first and if necessary the drive is a very good option.
