Using gaim-vv with MSN
by Colin Paul Adams
Does anyone know how to get this working on FC2. I have installed
gnutls from dag (along with gcrypt and opencdk), but no matter what I
do, I cannot get gaim-vv to configure use of gnutls. So I resorted to
editing the makefile. But even this doesn't seem to make any
difference - I continue to get the message that SSL support needs to
be compiled in.

Infrared
by Roger Grosswiler
hi,
i run fc2, which is really excellent :-)
now, i bought a ericsson t630 handy, on which you can transfer your
pictures via infrared. in windoze, this is working quite easily, you
don't need any software, just transfer them with the
infrared-connection-soft from windows.
so:
a) how do i get my fc-box connecting to irda-devices?
b) is there anything equal for the infrared-services to transfer data
between devices?
Thanks for you help & answers

alsa/sound question
by Chris Tencati
Under FC1 and 2, I never had any problem using applications that played
sounds. I recently updated most of my system (it is still technically FC2,
but essentially the same as the current test release of FC3), and now I have
two problems.
1) That update included alsa and udev, and between the two, /dev/dsp has
disappeared, so any app that looks for /dev/dsp now has no sound. I have
all the new devices now under /dev/snd, but are any of them appropriate? If
so I can just write a udev rule to symlink to /dev/dsp, but I couldn't
figure out which if any of the devices there would be the correct one.
2) In the now few instances where I have sound, it is virtually always
almost inaudible, and nothing I do seems to change this. The 'soundcard
detection' program works (I can hear it) but it's so soft that I had to play
it about 10 times to be sure I was actually hearing something. I've tried
using amixer and alsamixer to change the volumes for just about everything,
but none of that has any noticable effect on anything at all. Arts is
running and never reports any errors, and I've tried stopping and restarting
it, also to no effect. Oddly though, GStreamer's test sound plays at
full/normal volume...so sound works, just not for virtually all programs.
Any ideas on either/both of these problems?

K3B fails to burn DVD-RW discs
by Andrew Konosky
I just got my Optorite DVDRW, drive (12x DVD+R; 8x DVD-R; 4x DVD+-RW;
2.4x DVD+R9; 40x CD-R; 24x CD-RW; 40x CD-ROM; 12x DVD-ROM) drive from
Newegg and have just installed it. It is 2ndry IDE Master (/dev/hdc
/mnt/cdrom) I also have a Sony 52x CD-ROM, which is 2ndry IDE Slave
(/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom1). I have one TDK 2.4x DVD+RW 4.7GB disc and a 10
pack of Legacy 4x DVD+RW 4.7GB discs, but I am unable to burn on either
of them. I checked my fstab file, and the drive automounts CDs fine (in
KDE) and I just tested the burner by erasing and then recording a Compaq
650mb CD-RW, which was a success. Maybe this drive is not supported in K3B?
When I click burn, the drive spools up, then I get this error:

When I ejected the blank DVD+RW's after the failed burn, they appear to
have data written on the inner part of the disc, but K3B doesn't even
start the write before it fails. Also, my KDE desktop keeps refreshing
as if something is going on in the background, and I am unable to eject
the blank disk without rebooting.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

I googled this and found people with the same problem and the only
response was are you booting with rhgb. But no one ever answered the
question, or what rhgb dose. If it's a service can I just remove it?
Thanks, Tim...

JDK1.5.0 vs Mozilla-1.7.3
by Vinicius
Hello,
I have installed JDK1.5.0 on my FC2, and linked the file
"/usr/java/jdk1.5.0/jre/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so"
properly with mozilla, but when I run mozilla it shows nothing.
However, when I remove the simbolic link above, then mozilla runs fine.
What's going wrong, please?
TIA, Vinicius.

can't print with firefox 0.9
by Emiliano Brunetti
Hi all,
i'm having problems printing with Firefox 0.9 (rpm install from FC2
repo). I tried searching around with no results. Strange is that i can
print with all other apps, including mozilla. Also, the print command is
exactly the same:
lpr ${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME:+'-P'}${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME}
Anybody had such a problem?
Cheers.

home networking: easy way?
by Trevor Smith
I've tried reading through some samba docs and tried to set it up, but it's
incomprehensible. (I can get the servers running and WinXP can see my FC2
machine, but it can not actually access it and I have no idea how to see the
WinXP machine from Linux, which is what I really want.) This is all through a
Linksys wireless router, tried with just wired connections and with the linux
laptop on wireless.
Is there any easier way to network at home between WinXP and FC2? Or am I
going to have to get an advanced degree in networking before I can understand
enough about samba to ever hope to have these beasts connected?
