MPlayer / xine
by Joe Dumais
I downloaded and configured the two subject programs. They work
fine on audio files and streams, but not video. MPlayer, on .wmv streams,
reports asf redirect error. Xine crashed with an xiTK sigsegv error. I have
all the win32 codecs DLLs configured. With xine, the -V Xv option does not
work and reports an <xv> problem.
Is there a way to fix any of this?

any luck burning on a NEC 2500A ??
by Angelo Machils
Hi there.
I want to burn the ISO for the FC3, test 3 DVD, but I can't seem to burn
any DVD's (or CD's for that matter) on my NEC 2500A burner in FC2. I
have tried K3B, XCDRoast, Cdrecord and DVD record, but nothing works.
The drive is seen, but when trying to burn, nothing happens.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance, Angelo

SOLVED: can write to USB stick, but cannot read
by Joerg Otte
Last month I told about problems with my USB stick: I can write to but
not read from the stick.
Meanwhile I tried different (FC2 and vanilla) kernels 2.6.6 .. 2.6.9
but without success. As the last working kernel remained kernel 2.6.5.
Then while doing again "menuconfig" to a vanilla kernel 2.6.9 I
stumbled across a new block device driver called "Low Performace USB
Block driver" which was not selected by default. I compiled this
driver as module and gave it a try.
When I plugged in the stick all went automatically. I didn't have to
"modprobe" anything. The USB stick was detected as:
usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using address 2
ub: sizeof ub_scsi_cmd 60 ub_dev 924
uba: device 2 capacity nsec 512000 bsize 512
uba: was not changed
uba: uba1
In FC2 there are no device files /dev/uba* so what to mount here?. In
the source (ub.c) a major of 125 is used, so I created myself some
device files /dev/uba* with major 125 in the style of hda, hda0,..
brw-r--r-- 1 root disk 125, 0 31. Okt 11:00 /dev/uba
brw-r--r-- 1 root disk 125, 1 31. Okt 11:00 /dev/uba1
..
brw-r--r-- 1 root disk 125, 8 31. Okt 11:01 /dev/uba8
Then I mounted /dev/uba1 to /mnt/stick and it worked. The stick is now
fully operational again and I can get rid of kernel 2.6.5.
Somewhere I read the "ub" driver doesn't use SCSI emulation, so maybe
the SCSI emulation in recent kernels makes the problems.
According to the source (ub.c) major 125 is "stolen" so 125 might
change in future kernels.

yum Q (again)
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
Yum version is 2.0.7, FC2 upgraded from RH8 machine.
1. I thought I had killed the automatic yum invocation, but it
apparently came back on for some reason and ran last night,
which is puzzling.
2. yum proceeded to update a bunch of stuffs last night sometime,
stuff that included libxml2, but its apparently a fresh package as
its dated yesterday in the cache.
3. yum etc is still working, which after previous experience,
plumb amazes me!
4. Whats wrong with this exclude line in my yum.conf inserted
below that would cause it to ignore my exclude of libxml2 stuffs?

Unhandled exception in anaconda crashes upgrade of RH9 to FC2
by Mike Fleetwood
Hi All,
After a few issues trying to upgrade my RH9 to FC2 I have finally come
to an impasse because anaconda keeps crashing with an unhandled
exception. This occurs when trying to detect the existing RH9
installation. Hopefully someone can help.
Upgrade attempts:
1) Upgrade fails to detect my AdvanSys SCSI adapter.
2) Discovering that the AdvanSys driver in kernel 2.6 is not up to date
and FC2 doesn't support it. 2 methods of trying to load it by hand
from installation CD 1 fail. Finally find:
Advansys SCSI Cards and Fedora Core Linux
http://www.city-fan.org/ftp/contrib/drivers/advansys/
and am using a CD containing advansys-fc2-boot.iso to boot and
start the upgrade from FC2 install CD 1. Now the upgrade fails to
detect my existing RH9 installation and only offers to install a new
FC2 installation.
3) Boot with 'linux upgradeany' command. When detecting my existing
RH9 installation anaconda reports the unhandled exception.
4) Remove /etc/redhat-release and boot again with 'linux upgradeany'.
anaconda now finds an unknown Linux distribution to upgrade. As
soon as [Next] is clicked anaconda reports the same unhandled
exception.
5) Impasse.
Other relevant facts:
Hardware is a PC with an Athlon CPU and 1 GB RAM.
Installation CD passes checksum test.
/dev/sda2 contains / FS of my RH9 installation.
In the anaconda dump below the local variable desc contains 32 NULs.
They are just converted to (^) and (@) for display in this email.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I forgot to mention that it will not boot from cd and that it does not
dos on it so i can not access the disk to get the boot floppies. I
downloaded the boot disk and root disk image to my hard drive but could
not copy it to a formatted floppy i would get an error saying file to
big for the disk. I was lucky and found my install disks from a
slackware 3.5 install i had done years ago.
Thanks for all of the help. I figured out the problem i think i was
using the wrong distro. I used slackware and it went great.
That was my first post here and am a bit disappointed. I guess I was
not controversial or wanting something more exotic. I was just trying
to get some help with a simple install on an old computer so my son and
i can learn command line and not tie up my main linux box in the process.
Sorry don't mean to bitch or whine just frustrated.

Instalation question
by Sri Chav
Hi,
I just installed Fedora. My pc has 2 hard disks. One for Windows and
another had Linux 8.3. I installed Fedora on the secondary hard disk (which
had Linux 8.3). During this installation, I specified that the dual boot be
installed on my secondary hard disk. Changing the boot priorities in BIOS
did not help. So I started to install Fedora in upgrade mode, hoping to
install the dual boot on primary disk. I selected the primary disk for dual
boot installation. After the installation completed, I restarted my computer
and found that the dual boot did not pop up. My questions are:
1) Can Linux 8.3 and Fedora exist on the same disk? I believe the kernels
are different.
2) How can I fix the dual boot problem?
I would appreciate any kind of help in this matter.
Thank you

ifup sit1
by Thomas Zehetbauer
I just noticed that I cannot bring up my IPv6 tunnel device anymore.
Although the boot screens say something about "bringing up sit1 [OK]"
there is no sit1 device in ifconfig, even after "ifup sit1". Anyone else
seeing this?

Core2 install stymied on old (i686) computer...
by George Williams
I have an old machine which won't boot from cdrom, nor from a USB
device.
I was able to install RH9 from a floppy, but that doesn't seem to be
supported any more.
I have the disk space to copy all CDs onto a disk (which will not be
munched by the install process). Is there any way to boot from that?
