The upgrade is complete..
by WipeOut
I have been putting off upgrading my RH9 desktop for a while now, but
yesterday I climbed into it..
Copied my entire home directory and other data to another PC then did a
fresh install.. The in just copied back my .mozilla and .gaim
direcrities into my new how directory and everything was there, all my
bookmarks, mailinglist rules.. everything.. It was the most painless
upgrade of a desktop I have ever done.. then just copied back all my data..
I updated the system using yum and my local mirror site, and then added
the updated gmone-panel to get the drawres working..
Finally I added the latest JRE and Flash plugins to mozilla..
I am sure there will be a few apps that I am going to have to reinstall
but all in all it was a piece of cake..
I recommend anyone who is still hanging back on installing FC1 to go for
it..
Later..

Hi,
I know the replies to this may take a while to get back becasue of the

Has anyone installed Courier-MTA on FC1?? (I don't mean just
Courier-IMAP, I mean the whole thing with MySQL support)
if you have, are there any issues to watch out for, I want to test it
tomorrow.. :)

sysadmin and I NEED to have system data and user data in three or more
physical partitions ( at least /boot, / and /where_user-app_data_is ).
The reason is disponibility. I'm totaly agree with LVM and RAM reasons
that you exposed but having all data in / is dangerous.
> Think about a damaged filesystem. In parititioned systems, if
the damaged filesystem is user data or /boot, I can unmount it easily,
repair it, and mount it again. If all system except /boot are in /, I
need to shutdown the machine, startup in 'recovery mode', repair and
start machine.
> In this machine, for example we can have, internal dns, dhcp
server, cups ( printing ) and samba server. Using different partitions,
samba user data can be unmounted, and printig, dns and dhcp will not be
affected. With only / I can have all people in company stopped for a
while.
> <snip>
I prefer to break up user space for safety reasons. Some useres don't
know they have too much data on the machine until they choke it. If your
user stuff is on / then they can prevent normal system operations.
Normally I use /, /boot, /usr, /var, and /export; with the latter
getting home directories, shared filesystems, etc. /usr and /var/*could*
go on /, but I'm mostly used to keeping them seperate.
ciao!

Fedora ISO Images
by Harald Glatt
Hi,
I'm new to RedHat stuff because my first RedHat System is Fedora Core 1.
My Question is: Since FC2 test1 stands before - is there any location
where you can get FC2 ISO Images which are pre-test1?
I heared something about ISO Images in Rawhide?! But I don't even really
know where I find Rawhide stuff...
I'm curious to test FC2 but I have no clue how to get it installed
without ISO Images...

kernel 2.6.1 and USB
by Xiaohu
Hi Guys,
I built kernel 2.6.1 from source this weekend. It
works except it failed to mount USB file system. I
also failed to find modules for UBS mouse and UBS
keyboard. Can I add the modules to kernel ( modules
for UBS files system, for keyboard, and mouse ), what
are these modules ?
I used Microsoft multimedia keybaod and mouse connected
to a KVM. It works fine in X windows, but in terminal
mode, the machine spews out messages like :
.....unknown key released.....
I can still use vi etc, but painful. Does anyone know
anything about this ?
Thanks,
Xiaohu

Need help diagnosing why Mozilla won't start for my user.
by Patrick Bennett
For some reason (obviously, something changed - I'm just not sure what)
Mozilla will no longer launch for my primary account.
It just seems to go into limbo - nothing ever displays and the process
just, well, hangs. No error messages, nothing.
It launches fine for root (imagine that ;>), but not for my user, so
understandably, I'm assuming it's a permissions problem.
The only thing is, I can't figure out what the problem is. I've cleaned
the Mozilla profile information for my user, as well as verified that my
user
owned everything in its home directories.
Is there a log file somewhere I could look at? I'm really at a bit of a
loss./ /:(/
/Thanks,
Patrick Bennett

Bootup console screen size problem
by Michael Ben-Gershon
In my previous version of Linux (RH 7.2) I had a kernel
parameter vga=1 to set an 80x50 console screen for bootup. I have
done this with GRUB/Fedora, but this is reset to 80x25 when
the default font is set. I tried commenting out the lines
which do this in rc.sysinit but the size gets changed again
later on.
Surely there must be a way of doing this in a manner which does
not require hacking deep into the startup system?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
