X11 Issues

I just installed Fedora Core in to a VMWare virtual machine and it continues to tell me that /dev/mouse and /dev/msmouse do not exist. Yet the mouse works in console mode without issue using /dev/msmouse. I know that in Redhat 9 there was a command something like XF86Configure or similar that allowed me to run through the X11 configuration but I am not sure how to do this on fedora. Can anyone help with this? I have a MS Intellimouse Explorer and as I said the OS recognizes it but X11 doesn't. new kernel release?

i recieved a message from red hat notification tool that there is a kernal update. version, 2.6.6-1.435.2.1 i have....2.6.6-1.435 what is the difference? should i bother? is it going to give me problem's?

SOLVED: Nvidia lockup, even with newest kernel

We all know about the 4k/8k kernels, etc, but there are a few of us still having problems, even though everything's supposed to work. I happened to stumble on the problem, and it's very easy. I've installed 5336 for a while, there was hope that it would work without a lot of sketchy howto's and kernel re-compilations. So it was still there when I installed 6106. Upon some research into the logfiles (/var/log/Xforg.log) or whatever it's called these days, I noticed that it was loading the 5336 _module_ even though I'd installed the 6106 driver today. You must _remove_ all of the 5336, before installing the latest driver...for some reason it's version of an 'upgrade' isn't bug free. But for the first time I'm running on the new module and will soon test out the 3D stuff....I just wanted to post my findings 'cause I know a lot of people are jonesing for some UT/ET/Tuxcart/etc. Checking 3d performance.....YES. Not only operational, but seemingly better than before! :) If this helps you, I'll be so happy. Fedora Core 2 and audio

Hi, I'm new to this list; not all that new to Linux though. I recently upgraded from RedHat 8 (Psyche?) to Fedora Core 2. Maybe I expected too much, but when I started up xmms there was no audio from the audio interface - I use headphones plugged into the headphone jack of the audio interface. Xmms worked out of the box on RedHat 8. I poked around a bit and found that I might need something called ALSA. I found source for 'alsaplayer-0.99.76' compiled and tried to run it. It gives a 'Failed to load output plugin "alsa". Trying defaults. zsh: segmentation fault alsaplayer' error. I have no idea what an output plugin is, let alone an ALSA one. I poked around some more and found an RPM that might do the trick called 'alsaplayer-0.99.76-2.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm' I downloaded that and tried installing it - only to find it had failed some dependency checks: libid3tag.so.0 is needed by alsaplayer-0.99.76-2.1.fc2.fr libmad.so.0 is needed by alsaplayer-0.99.76-2.1.fc2.fr libsndfile.so.1 is needed by alsaplayer-0.99.76-2.1.fc2.fr libsndfile.so.1(libsndfile.so.1.0) is needed by alsaplayer-0.99.76-2.1.fc2.fr libxosd.so.2 is needed by alsaplayer-0.99.76-2.1.fc2.fr I'm lost. I have no idea what these are. If they were so important why weren't they part of the core install? I then poked around some more and found something called 'alsa-oss-1.0.5' You guessed it - I downloaded and tried to install it to no avail. the ./configure gave up the ghost complaining that - 'checking for libasound headers version >= 0.9.0... not present. configure: error: Sufficiently new version of libasound not found.' I assume this means I do not have a sufficiently new version of libasound installed. I looked around and downloaded 'alsa-lib-1.0.3a-2.i386.rpm,' compiled for Fedora Core 2, which I proceeded to install. The install told me 'package alsa-lib-1.0.3a-2 is already installed.' To quote someone else on this list, 'WTF?' How hard is it to get sound working on a Linux machine? Any help would be very much appreciated. (A very frustrated) Steve Cooke.

MODPOST compilatiob between 2.4 and 2.6

Folks, I don't know if it is the right list or not (ps direct me to the right list to post the question). I compiled some modles on 2.4. I rewrote the Makefiles to fit 2.6 Kbuild requirements. I had to do a composite Object. obj-m := switchMod.o switchMod := switch1.o switch2.o There are some statics declared in switch1.c that are being referenced in switch2.c (via extern decleartion). When switchMod.Ko is built, it complains about undefined symbols (teh statics in switch1.o). I made the stats as globals and it fixed the problem (segmentation fault though). So question is why did things work on 2.4 got broken in 2.6 kernel? What additional info does module writers need to take care for 2.6 kernel. Red Hat 9 to FC2 and email

Hi peoples, I just installed FC2 onto my system which was running Redhat 9.0 (RH9) On the RH9 system I used to serve some users e-mail accounts using pop3. As these were casual Windows users, I'd run fetchmail to collect their e-mail from the ISP and then their e-mail would wait in /var/spool/mail/user_name until they checked their e-mail from their Windows PC. Their PC's would send their e-mail directly to the ISP's smtp server so I didn't configure sendmail or postfix. With the change to my system to FC2, I discovered that pop3 is now managed by the Cyrus IMAP mailer system. I worked out how to create their mailboxes and login via cyrus but I am at a loss to find out how to a. Convert their existing /var/spool/mail/xxx mailboxes to the Cyrus system and b. Given they are casual users, I want to still use fetchmail to get their mail off the ISPs' system, so how do I get any new mail into the Cyrus system Thanks in advance Burn
