usb card reader problem - deleted device
by Olaf Mueller
Hello,
a single card in my SD card reader (usb) could be mounted
with /dev/sda1. When booting my system with a card in the card reader
the device /dev/sda1 is created. But when I drop the card from the
card reader over night, /dev/sda and /dev/sda1 will be deleted on the
next day and the device /dev/sda1 will not be automaticly created
again when inserting a SD card. Then I have to reconnect (pull out/put
in) the usb plug from the card reader *with* the SD card inserted to
get /dev/sda1 again. When reconnecting the usb plug from the card
reader *without* a inserted SD card, then only the device /dev/sda
will be created but not /dev/sda1. A later inserting of the SD card
will not create /dev/sda1.
What process deletes /dev/sda1 when leaving my card reader over night
without a card inside and how could I prevent this? I don't want to
leave a card inside the card reader the whole time.
And why is there no device /dev/sda1 when I inserted the SD card later?
I never have had this problem in previous kernel versions.
regards
Olaf

pam_ldap
by Jon Thompson
Ok: I have a RHEL 3.0 box and a Fedora Core 3. I am using pam_ldap
for system authentication. They have the exact same configuration
files and parameters. I copied the files from the working box to the
malfunctioning system. I can execute getent passwd and see all of the
user names that are available through ldap. However, when I try and
login it fails. When I try and su to a vlaid user I get an 'incorrect
password' error. I have tcpdumped the traffic and watched the logs on
teh ldap server, the system is connecting and there has been no
failure due to acls. However, when I run debug withe the pam module I
get a pam_ldap: simple bind failure. Has anyone else come across
anything like this?
Thanks,
Jon

evolution and broken mime?
by Dan Stromberg
Hi.
I've been a heavy evolution user ever since I gave up mutt, and it's done
its job very well - up to now.
Suddenly, I'm having serious mime troubles in evo.
Some mime messages are displayed fine by evolution, but others are just a
mess. Attached gifs look like gibberish, it displays part of the mime
headers as though it were text - I even had one message that was causing
evo to crash every time I restarted it. Also, if I "view e-mail source",
evo typically ignores everything after the mime header - so that isn't
much of an interim workaround.
What do I need to do to get my old, sturdy evolution back?
Please help! :)

Ok, I got my requisite newbie public flogging. Forget the security stuff,
forget the cost stuff, I'll ask one question: Anyone have any trouble
installing FC3 on this box?

Core 3 and sounds
by Chevee Dodd
Okay.
GAIM wont give me sound.
I've googled to find a few tips from Core 2, but I
can't seem to find any info on how to fix this in Core
3.
My sound card IS working.
I can play online audo.
System sounds work.
No GAIM sounds.
I have the GAIM sounds turned on.
I set the Gnome sound server to "Enable sound server
startup" under Applications -> Preferences -> Sound.
What am I missing?
Thanks!
Chevee

Help with Fedora Core 3: Soundcard detection test does not work
by Roberto R. Heredia
Hello dear friends,
I am running Fedora Core 3 on an IBM. I was using Mandrake 10.0 and
everything was working fine. Now, my sound system doesn't work. I know
the sound card has been recognized because the hardware browsers shows
that it is installed okay. When I do the soundcard detection test, it
does not work.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advanced.

FC3 on Dell PowerEdge 2800 and embedded SCSI and 10/100/1000 NICs ?
by McGuffey, David C.
A couple of weeks back I posted a message about openwall, grsecurity, PAX,
LIDS, and Bastille for FC3 but didn't get much response. So I'm going to
create a small lab to investigate these issues plus SELinux on my own.
I've considering ordering a Dell PowerEdge 2800, with two Xenon 3.0GHz
processors, 2 GB ram, embedded SCSI and embedded 10/100/1000 NICS for about
$2,800.
Anyone running FC3 on this fairly generic box? Any problems? Any
recommendations for a better box at the same or less cost?

TOP POSTING
by Frank Stratton - VE3YY
Hi All,
I've decided to withdraw from this list, but before I do I want to have my 2
cents worth. I received a nasty message from a David CURRY (see below).
This message was inappropriate and uncalled for. I am new to this list and
if he had taken to time to explain what was required I would have changed
from digest format to individual messages.
Instead this imbecile, ranted on about what a TURD I was. I don't believe
this man would have said this if he was standing in front of me. I wonder
how he thinks lowering the esteem of someone to his level accomplishes
anything useful. Can you imagine having an employee of your company sending
out emails with the kind of statements Mr. David Curry has made? I'd have
his ass out the door so fast he wouldn't have to worry about being hit from
behind by it.
Since Mr. David Curry seems to think I have offended Alexander Dalloz, and I
wonder if that is the case. If so, I have no qualms about apologizing to
Alexander and will do so gladly since he was very helpful to me. In cutting
a pasting the parts of the digest format I wanted to acknowledge my thanks.
If this breaks some net etiquette, then I apologize to all users of this
list for my obvious lack of understanding. I thought that this list was
about passing on solutions to problems; maybe I was wrong.
I think I understand why Alexander wants to have individual messages and
post to the threads. A simple note when I signed up on this list would have
solved that problem. I would have changed to individual message format and
made his life easier.
Now back to Mr. David Curry. Mr. David Curry, I've been in the computer
business since 1963. Since that time I've worked on just about every piece
of hardware and software going. I've been around UNIX based systems since
1976 and in that time I've met many fine and upstanding people. They were
courteous, kind, and helpful. None of which describes you in any way. I
cannot imagine what kind of brain you have between your ears to write such
an email to someone you do not know except by the contents of a single
email. If I were your father, I would grab you and wash your mouth out with
soap.
Thank you all for reading this far.
I am sincerely yours,
Frank Stratton

Alexander Dalloz has made it quite clear on fedora-list that he urges
people to avoid top posting and to interleave their replys to prior
messages with the replys following only appropriate context material
from the prior message.
You return his kindness of granting you the benefit of his fedora
expertise by TOP POSTING your "thanks". That act tells me that you are
either incredibly inept socially or a world class TURD who intended to
publicly insult if not humiliate Alexander!
YOU OWE HIM AN APOLOGY!

Thanks Alexander,
I also moved the directory over to an alternate disk and put in a symbolic
link. I found 3587 files in the up2date directory but it only has a few RPM
files. Seems like a lot of information to keep around. I upgraded this
system from Fedora Core 2 to Core 3 and applied the updates. I can't say
that I'm very happy with the upgrade path. I lost the automount of CDROMs
and some packages have some mysterious problems. I think I will back up my
data the next time and "upgrade" by simply loading a new version and
replacing the OS.
Cheers,
Frank

Keep the .hdr files. I suggest you reconfigure up2date to not keep the
RPMs after installation, if disk space is an issue for you.

I have to agree...but either way, top or bottom, if
this is the 'etiquette' of the list, perhaps that
could be explained to someone when they subscribe--not
just getting snubbed when you top-post unknowingly.
This is a rule I'm unfamiliar with--being new to the
mail-list game. Don't just snub people about it (yes
I'm talking to you Alexander Dalloz--see "Possible
Apache or Squirrelmail Bug?" thread)--let someone know
and then perhaps they won't do it anymore. And
yes--you can do it in a nice way Mr. Dalloz!
(See--I've already learned my lesson here!)

legal question
by Marc M
Hello:
I have a 'technical' question that does not involve technology
specifically, but I am hoping that someone on the list can help me. I
have an employment possibility doing Red Hat Enterprise Linux and a
lot of security stuff. I really want the job but they are making me
sign this Stalinist contract to the effect that ANYTHING now or in the
future (thoughts, concepts, software, plans, processes, RECORDINGS,
images, etc.) -- is THEIRS. You wouldn't believe it if I had time to
type everything. Basically I am a slave to them from now on.
That's right, anything NOW OR IN THE FUTURE, on the job or off. So if
you are configuring/writing/tweaking software all day, one would
<think> that you would later be liable or subject to just about
anything they want to claim. Think about it. Who doesn't learn and
grow from one job to another? Who doesn't apply
things/practices/habits/processes, from place A to place B?
I beat out every other candidate from multiple agencies with this. I
have come a LOOOOONG way in this process with the recruiter and I am
formulating a letter to the effect of 'I am sorry but I am not signing
my life away and if it's a dealbreaker so be it'. I also included
some HUGE info to show that I am interested in 'educating' these
recruiter types as to the restrictions they are placing on something
that is suppossed to be 'open'. I am beginning to conclude that some
people and opportunities are not worth fooling with, since they come
with more headaches than they are worth.
Does anyone know a qualified lawyer in the space of OSS that
understands contracts, employment, and the GPL for starters? If
someone can represent me in this matter I may actually be able to go
forward and strike through terms and conditions. And have any of you
run into similar situations? What did you do? Finally let me
underscore that this goes WAAAY beyond the typical 'trade
secrets'/proprietary information type verbiage, which I would consider
normal and reasonable under most circumstances.
Thanks
Marc
