md5sum discrepencies
by Ryan
Hi all! I've recently installed and yum updated 2 indentical boxes, and
for fun and good measure I was running md5sums to see if the updates
worked correctly on both. However:
[root@tsuji etc]# md5sum /usr/sbin/sshd
61759cb28ff270f794a2e7efc15cb965 /usr/sbin/sshd
[root@eri proc]# md5sum /usr/sbin/sshd
1773adfda131e2496fafd898747245e2 /usr/sbin/sshd
Any ideas why? This also concerns me:
[root@tsuji etc]# md5sum /bin/ls
aad0775ac64588d61d258fabd2a777e1 /bin/ls
[root@eri proc]# md5sum /bin/ls
5101a32ed2e5680ccf49190bb42f0a7b /bin/ls
Both boxes are dual homed K6 450Mhz. Anyone have any suggestions? I
would figure they should all be the same, but I've seen stranger things.
Anyone know what the sums should be, or can point me in the direction to
find out?

Ryan

Can't rebuild journal of EXT-3 partition
by Longming Lee
Dear friends,
There is a EXT-3 partion in the FC2 hard disk, and it needs to
fsck for something wrong. I do the fsck while booting. But
6 hours passes and it can't be done. I stop fsck and then I
mount it to be EXT-2 OK.
I unmount this broken partition, and try to rebuild the journal of EXT-3,
but it is failure.
[root@nfs2 root]# tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/sdb1
tune2fs 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
Illegal block number passed to ext2fs_unmark_block_bitmap #1632133966
for block bitmap for /dev/sdb1
Segmentation fault
How should I do to fix or rebuild the journal of this EXT-3 broken
partition?

Longming 3/31

Here it is--minus the comments and the names have been
changed to protect the innocent--and me too. If you
need the "rest" of the stuff that is in the conf file,
let me know. I'm trying to catch on to the posting

We have several Dell Precision WorkStations, and I see this problem on
exactly 1 machine so far (Dell Precision 450, dual hyperthreading
Xeons). (User logs in using either GNOME oder KDE - machine freezes, power
off/on cycle necessary). Because these are production machines I did not
try to disable SMP but reinstalled the previous xorg-x11 RPMs and the
problem went away. Our other machines with identical hardware don't seem
to be affected - strange.

Thanks Gustavo,
Yes, you have got the expected result. This is very strange. I am not
sure whether this is problem with playing wine/winetools package or
having the j2re package from dag wieers, but I managed to solve this
problem by removing both of them and get the java plugin from jre-1.5.0
linked to my browser i.e. firefox. Thanks for the confirmation.

xorg-x11-6.8.2-1.FC3.13 appears to not like multiprocessors
by Seth Alford
I have a dual processor Dell Precision 650. As of today, X will freezes
shortly after it starts, but, only with the second processor enabled. If
I go into the BIOS, and disable the second processor, then X works. If I
re-enable the second processor, X freezes again.
Two things happened today.
1. I opened up the machine and blew out all of the dust. I could have jostled
something and caused the second processor to break.
2. This morning up2date installed a new version of xorg software:
[Wed Mar 30 07:13:27 2005] up2date installing packages: ['foomatic-3.0.2-13.3', 'krb5-devel-1.3.6-5', 'krb5-libs-1.3.6-5', 'krb5-workstation-1.3.6-5', 'telnet-0.17-32.FC3.2', 'xorg-x11-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-Mesa-libGL-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-Mesa-libGLU-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-Xdmx-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-Xnest-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-Xvfb-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-deprecated-libs-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-deprecated-libs-devel-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-devel-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-doc-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-font-utils-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-sdk-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-tools-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-twm-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-xauth-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-xdm-6.8.2-1.FC3.13', 'xorg-x11-xfs-6.8.2-1.FC3.13']
In the process of diagnoising this problem I logged in on several of the
control-alt-FN alternative screens, while the second processor was enabled.
I was able to run multiple du processes, and the machine didn't freeze.
So I don't think that I broke processor 2.
I hit upon the idea of trying to disable the second processor because I had
seen references to X freezes on this list. One suggestion to fix it was to
disable hyperthreading, which simlates having a second processor. I tried
that. It worked. But now I only have half of my available processors
running. Yes, most of the time, surfing the web, I wouldn't notice it.
But when I'm doing multiple tar -j's for a backup, I will.
So here are my questions:
1. Anyone else running FC3 on a dual processor? Are you seeing this problem?
2. Would this be better reported here, or to xorg? Does xorg mind having
bugs submitted against xorg packages with a "FC3" as part of the package
name? Or are they going to tell me something like "Oh, those packages
were modified by the Fedora project. We won't do anything about this
problem until you show us that it happened with our unadulterated packages."
3. Does it matter that the bogomips on the second processor are not equal
to the bogomips on the first processor? (I would include the 2 different
numbers here, but /proc/cpuinfo is only telling me about the first
processor, since the second processor is diabled in BIOS.)
4. How to go back to the previous xorg release? Get it from the fedora
web page?
Thanks,

java applet input problem?
by Alimin Bijosono Oei
Hi guys,
I am running FC3 here and recently encountered a problem with typing
inputs to an opened java applet window from
http://www.global-view.com/fxtrekcharts.html. When clicking on
Indicators on the toolbar, and then selecting to one of the indicators,
say Exponential Moving Average > New, a java applet window is supposed
to pop up and allow us to input the parameters.
I used to be able to do this but now after updating my Fedora box to the
latest bunch of updates available the problem appears. I am not sure if
this is the problem with the java applet itself or it is related to java
installed on Fedora or something else. Can anyone verify this? (I
tried opening the same page with latest Opera, Firefox, Mozilla, and
Konqueror, all with the same result). Thanks a lot for any help provided.
