skipping xmms package updates?
by Ferindo Middleton
I've uninstalled xmms from my system and went to www.xmms.org to reinstall
the package using the rpm provided at the site so I can play mp3 files. How
do I stop this package from being updated and overwritten during nightly yum
updates so that I don't end up automatically going back to a fedora channel
distribution that can't play mp3 files?

Fedora People Blog
by Kevac Marko
Hi.
Is there any way to separate posts about Fedora and other posts? It is
really annoying when i read about anime, for example, in Fedora blog (sorry
Pete, but it is really boring for me).
Maybe it will be better to collect posts only with tag "fedora", for
example.

Fedora(rawhide) and XFCE 4.4 beta 2
by Paul Michael Reilly
I bit the bullet and installed Xfce 4.4 beta 2
(xfce4-4.3.90.2-installer.bin) on my rawhide system. I installed it
to /usr/local thinking that putting /usr/local/bin on my PATH variable
before /usr/bin would cause the beta2 executables to run before any
yum installed (fedora-extras-development.repo) Xfce 4.2 executables
(/usr/bin) so my first question is: was/is this wishful thinking (that
I could have both 4.4 beta 2 and 4.2 installed to the same system and
not encounter serious issues)?
I am running a dual head configuration (individual displays rather
than xinerama). There are two issues that pop up immediately that I
need to solve:
1) there is a bar across the top of both displays that appears to be
an orphaned panel, i.e. I cannot get rid of it (the original panel
that was at the top has been moved to the bottom of screen 0 and works
just fine there.
2) I cannot seem to use the settings->panel manager dialog to
accomplish much with the second display. When I click on the box
representing the second display the dialog disappears along with all
the applications running in the fist display. I will need to repeat
this a few more times before I can accurately describe what is really
going on, so this description represents my first take.
I will be googling for more information on these issues so any quick
leads to helpful information will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
-pmr

Need an fstab entry, can't see DVD or floppy
by dcooke@efn.org
This is old Red Hat for most but I am a Fedora Plebe seeking
answers for way to mount the floppy and DVD ROM drives.
Entry from fstab
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0
Is all I have. From looking at the processes in /var/log/messages
I think the floppy might be fd0 and the DVD is hda. Shall I create
folders after the entries I need to make abobe and if so, what shall I put therein, if
anything.
Thanks

eclipse tomcat plugin as non-root user
by sbeam
Trying to start/stop tomcat from within eclipse under my normal user
account, getting a java.security.AccessControlException in the console.
Tomcat5.5 was installed from jpackage.org
I've added my user acct to the 'tomcat' group and can
read /usr/share/tomcat55/conf/ files. And tomcat is binding to port
8080
and I can run tomcat using /usr/bin/tomcat55 from the shell
Has anyone had this working? I'd like to avoid running Eclipse as root -
thanks

Re: Kernel panic after FC2->FC5
by Jack Howarth
Michael,
If I can mount the upgraded FC5 partitions in linux rescue mode,
would it make sense to just chroot to them and attempt to yum update
everything to the latest versions? I do worry that just attempting to
install a newer kernel might tickle some missing dependencies if I
don't do it through yum.
