growisofs - burn the file again?
by Dave M
I am using growisofs to burn DVD's. After burning a file I do diff to see
if it was burned properly. If there is an error I try to burn the file
again using growisofs.
I think growisofs sees that the file is already there and does not try to
burn it again. So when I do diff after re-burning I see the same error in
the same location. Is there a way to force growisofs (which actually uses
mkisofs) to re-burn a file that has the same name as a file that is already
on the DVD?
My command looks like this:
$growisofs -quiet -use-the-force-luke=tty -use-the-force-luke=notray -M
/dev/dvd -r -J -T datafiletoburn.dar
Also, what is the best way to erase DVD+RW disks? I do not need to wipe all
of the data, just clear the file system tables so the disk can be re-used.
I am using:
dvd+rw-format -force /dev/dvd
But I read that this is not good for the media. It may damage the DVD+RW
after erasing it a few times? Is there a better way?
TIA

Cinepaint
by Claude Jones
Does anyone have Cinepaint running in FC6?
I've downloaded the ver 21 tarball and running configure yields up the
following toward the very end:
checking for gtk-config... no
checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.8... no
*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to gtk-config.
If I run this I see the following gtk stuff installed on my system:
$ rpm -qa | grep gtk
gtk2-engines-2.8.0-1.fc6
usermode-gtk-1.87-3
libgtk-java-2.8.7-2.fc6
gtkhtml3-3.12.2-1.fc6
gtk-sharp2-2.10.0-3.fc6
gtkspell-2.0.11-2.1
gtk+-1.2.10-55.fc6
authconfig-gtk-5.3.12-1.fc6
pygtk2-2.10.3-3.fc6
gtkhtml2-2.11.0-3
gnome-python2-gtksourceview-2.16.0-1.fc6
gtk-murrine-engine-0.31-1.leofc6
pygtk2-libglade-2.10.3-3.fc6
gtk2-devel-2.10.4-8.fc6
gtk2-2.10.4-8.fc6
gtksourceview-1.8.0-1.fc6
libswt3-gtk2-3.2.1-23.fc6
I could really use the more robust aspects of Cinepaint over the Gimp - does
anyone know where I need to go to pursue this? I've tried the rpm search but
the most recent rpm I can find is for FC4, which used to run under FC5, but
won't install on FC6 with the following errors:
Missing Dependency: libIex.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Missing Dependency: libIlmImf.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Missing Dependency: libHalf.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Missing Dependency: libImath.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Searches on rpmbone and google yield up openEXR packages for those libs -
openEXR is already installed on my system, though presumably, not the version
I need
So, to get back to my question, is this going nowhere, or has someone
succeeded in getting Cinepaint to run on FC6?

FC6 and acroread - not working
by Florin Andrei
I got acroread-7.0.5-2.2.fc5.rf.nosrc.rpm from here:
http://dries.ulyssis.org/rpm/packages/acroread/info.html
I extracted the spec file. I downloaded the latest acroread tar.gz from
Adobe, then adjusted the spec for the new version. Then rebuilt the
acroread binary package.
But when I launch acroread, I get a bunch of messages like this:
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
Any clue?

Wlan prob - UDP works, ICMP works, TCP doesn't work [long]
by Kai Fürstenberg
Hello List,
I set up FC6 with wlan connection with BCM4318 Chipset. After some probs
with wpa_supplicant I finally managed to get it work (as I thought). I
also have another box with FC4 as internet gateway (Server) in my local
network which has a cabled connection to an access point.
The problem is quite strange:
I can do nslookup from my workstation with the local server as
DNS-Server and get a correct answer. I can ping the server. But I can't
establich a SSH-Session to the server. It seems that UDP and ICMP works
fine so far, but it is impossible to establish a TCP connection.
All iptables-chains are set to ACCEPT for the local network (both server
and workstation).
Config and proof below.
The AP is configuired to use WPA and WPA2 (PSK), TKIP and AES encryption
Does anyone know a solution?

Again: All iptables chains within the local network are set to ACCEPT.
The connection from Window$ on the same machine (dual boot) works perfect.

udev and console.perms
by Peter Horst
I am trying to set up a headless FC5 system such that I have full use of
/dev/mixer, /dev/cdrom, etc., when I login via SSH. Mikkel Ellertson &
others were kind enough to provide some clues in an earlier series of
emails, which I unfortunately did not save.
I tried changing the 'perm' setting in
/etc/security/console.perms.d/50-default.perms for the <sound> group,
but it had no effect - is it the case that this setting changes only the
permissions that are assigned to a user who is concurrently logged in on
the console? I may have misunderstood.
Any help getting sound up and running on this headless machine as a
regular user would be greatly appreciated.

They refer to my two DVD drives (and appear whenever the drives have been
used). Is there any significance that I should be aware of?

Various questions
by Anne Harriss
Please could you tell me how I find what is my "Admin address" to log into
these pages?
More seriously, I have a problem. My son installed linux Fedora, and wrote
down the root password down for me...except that he made a mistake in
writing it down, and so I can't download updates, etc. OK, so I need to
change the password, and he told me how to do that. Except that when I
write the new one, the respons in the Grub command is that it needs
authenticating. Well, I don't understand what THAT means. What do I do?

dd backup unbelievably slow on SATA laptop
by Kevin Kempter
Hi List;
I have FC5 on an IBM Thinkpad Z60m with 2G of RAM and a 100G SATA HD. I also
have a removeable CD/DVD drive and I can insert a HD adapter into
the "ultrabay" which adds a second HD attached to the main bus (as the CD/DVD
would be).
I inserted the second 100G ATA HD into the ultrabay and booted into single
user mode. The second HD shows up as /dev/hdc my main HD shows up
as /dev/sda. (Note if I boot with hdc=noprobe into single user mode then the
system is not aware of the root user)
I run this:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/hdc bs=64K &
pid=$!
Note: I've tried the same with bs=128K, bs=1M, bs=256K and with no bs tag at
all with the same results
Then I check the progress from time to time with this:
kill -USR1 $pid
I find that my avg speed in 1.7m/sec which leads to a full backup time of
around 16-17 hours.
Before the deal with M$ I used to run SuSE 10 and was able to do a dd on the
same laptop inside of 4 hours.
Any help would be much appreciated....
Thanks in advance

FC4 -> FC6 dvd writer not detected
by Douglas Phillipson
After I upgraded to FC6 my DVD writer was no longer detected, I suspect
because I had to comment out a line in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules
to get my machine to boot. What can I do to get the DVD detected and
the device made for it, after the machine is booted. Because I had to
comment out the following line in 50-udev.rules:
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="?*", ENV{MODALIAS}=="?*",
RUN+="/sbin/modprobe $env{MODALIAS}"
I had to put: "/sbin/modprobe snd-emu10k1" in /etc/rc.local for my
sound card driver to be loaded. I assume I need another modprobe
command for my DVD, I just don't know what it is...
Thanks
