Rebuild computer with Intel DG965WH motherboard
by Gordon Charrick
I decided it's time to rebuild my computer and replace the aging Asus
motherboard and Matrox graphics card and old ATA drives.
I went to Fry's and picked out a motherboard that I hope will work with
no problems. At least I have 15 days to return it. I also picked up a
couple Maxtor SATA drives. I plan to use the onboard graphics and sound.
Doing some googling, I'm not quite sure how compatible all the hardware
will be with FC6. It looks like there might be a problem with DVD drive.
Before I go through the time and hassle of taking apart my perfectly
working computer to replace all the innards only to find I may have to
get a different motherboard, I thought I'd ask the list for
recommendations on current motherboards that can handle dual-core
processors. Fry's has a dizzying array of motherboards in stock so
picking one is no easy task when it comes to Linux.

FC6 shutdown error with vmware
by Paul Smith
Dear All
When I shutdown the PC, it repeats an error message, in fact, endless.
The error message starts after killall process activated.
Here is the error:
unregister_netdevice: waiting for vmnet1 to become free Usage Count = 1
The error is endless, I have to press i/o button to hard shutdown.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

multiple-user behavior
by Michael Klinosky
Hello.
I have FC 6, and use gnome. I just created a second user, and I'm
curious about the behavior when I log in to the other user.
On the first user, I run BOINC (a distributed processing client). So, I
log out of that account, and into the second. I used 'top', and noticed
that boinc is still running.
I logged out of the second and back into the first. With 'top', I see
boinc is still running; however, its gui is nowhere to be found! How do
I get it back?

"offline" media check of install DVD?
by Danny Yee
Is there anyway of performing a media check of an install DVD without
actually booting off it? That is, I've just burned a DVD and would
like to be able to check it now rather than during the install (to
reduce downtime on the machine I'm installing onto).
Danny.

Is there any reason you answer questions with questions?

You've got it Anne. I installed each new release and so became
accustomed to updates every day, I forgot about the holidays
completely and you were also correct in assuming that I am not erudite
when it comes to linux, I just like to play with it. Thanks Anne.

DVD Playback problems
by Rob Brown-Bayliss
Hi, I am not sure if it's a hardware problem or a software problem,
but it seems like the problems started with fc6, that is I dont recall
having these isuues with 4 and 5...
I have a dvd/cdr combo drive...
The problem is some dvd's are not being mounted, and some are, but
sometimes after a couple of tries the disk will automount, other times
if I reboot with the dvd in the drive it's there, and other times it's
not.
I have no problems with CD's in the same drive. Reading and writing
works fine.
Any one else having dvd playback problems? And is there any way other
than buying a new drive to prove it is a hard ware problem?

difficult rpm problem
by Jack Wallen
Hello everyone,
I'm not sure what I installed to cause this problem but anytime I try to
run rpm now I get this error:
rpm: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
This is also keeping me from running OpenOffice and a few other apps.
I've try to find the solution with the help of my old friend google but
no luck. Obviously I can't fix it by upgrading or re-installing libstdc
++ via rpm because rpm won't work.
Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this problem?
Thank you so much.

Thanks for anwering my question Jim. I guess the Christmas and New
Years had an effect. I usually look every day and there have been
updates every day for months. When a couple of days went by with no
updates I thought something went wrong with my yum config , but I just
got some updates so all is well, thanks.

Need help wth kickstart setup of network devices. ifcfg files being renamed to .bak
by Howard Wilkinson
Can anybody point me to the code that is renaming the ifcfg-<device>
files I am creating in the post install part of kickstart. They end up
as ifcfg<device>.bak and get replaced by DHCP entries. As we run our
servers with bonded interfaces I need to get these device to come up as
slaves to the bond device which has a static address.
I know this happens after the %post section has run and I am fairly sure
it happens after the reboot and once the rc.sysinit hhas run for the
first time. I do not have firstboot installed or any of the
system-config-* packages so I have eliminated them from the path. I am
fairly sure it is not anaconda itself that is doing this, but cannot for
the life of me see where it could be happening.
I am running a slightly extended FC6 install with minimal packages.
