Fedora 7 and bcm43xx_mac802112
by John Pierce
Hello, I have just installed Fedora 7 on an HP Pavillion DV9208NR
laptop. I have gotten the bcm43xx_mac80211 driver to load the
firmware. It turns the radio on and if I run the command iwlist
scanning I see the cells around my neighborhood, including my own.
This is the dmesg just after ifup wlan0.

This is the closest I have ever gotten with the bcm43xx driver on this
laptop. OpenSuSE 10.2 will not even see the hardware.
I am using the latest firmware which I extracted with bcm43xx-fwcutter
and have it placed in /lib/firmware.
If anyone has any ideas, thoughts, suggestions I would appreciate them.

does setpci latency_timer fail on some mobos?
by Mark A. Miller
I have been experimenting with MythDora recently. After experimenting
with assorted hardware and distros, my video is fairly good, but I get
an occasional hiccup, especially in action scenes. When I try to set
the latency on the SATA controller to something high like AA, it stays
at 0 (see configuration and screendump below.)
My questions:
# Is the concept of PCI latency relevant on a PCIe system? Are my
integrated controllers like the SATA on PCI or PCIe?
# Is it possible that some motherboards just refuse to change their
latency values?
# Is there some other I/O bottleneck I should be looking at?
Thanks so much in advance,
Mark

can't mount ntfs drive with FC6
by Dave Stevens
Hi,
I am trying to use by FC6 box to recover some data from a Windows XP NTFS
drive that is giving a SMART warning. It is under warranty so all I want is
to get the data off and send it in for replacement. The failing drive is a
SATA-II Samsung 2504C. I can boot the dud system from a Knoppix CD and mount
the drive and read most data. But I can't get it off, it is much too large to
ftp to a remote site in the time I have available.
I moved the drive to my FC6 box and rebooted. At startup time there are errors
that I don't understand in dmesg, "SStatus 123, SControl 300" and the drive
is not mounted. I have tried mounting it with ,
"# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sda1 -o force"
but get various helpful messages that seem not to be applicable.
Can anyone suggest an avenue of attack?

Fedora 7, software packages and Yum confusion
by Jeffrey Ross
Ok, I've just installed Fedora 7 and I'm looking for packages I used to
have installed on prior versions of the OS.
Off the top of my head... I'm looking for from the previously known as
legacy servers, tftpd and telnetd. I'm also looking for a CD/DVD
burning application, tvtime (or other tv viewing application), I'm sure
this is going to lead to questions on getting my TV tuner card working,
its an old Haupaug BT848 based card, last time I had it working was FC5.
I'm sure I'll come up with others but what would be more helpful not
only to me but probably to others as well is how to find the package(s)
I'm looking for, create a repro entry if required so that a simple "yum
install {application}" would work.
TIA Jeff

F7: X vesa at 1680x1050 no go?
by Patrick Lists
Hi,
I just installed F7 which went great. When I booted the DVD I added to
the kernel command line "resolution=1680x1050" which as far as I could
tell was honored. Once F7 was installed and the laptop rebooted X does
not want to display at 1680x1050 with the vesa driver (which I need
cause this laptop has an ATI X1300). The system-config-display app
doesn't show 1680x1050. I also tried to add Modes "1680x1050" to the
Screen section in xorg.conf but that does not make a difference either.
Is there any way that I can force X to use 1680x01050?
Thanks for any pointers.
Regards,
Patrick
ps: ajax/Adam Jackson if you read this: with your much appreciated
tweaks to the X server I can now do a graphical install on my laptop.
Where the screen was previously directed to the wrong port it now shows
the F7 welcome screen in all its glory. Thanks!

ata1:00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
by Frank Cox
I updated this computer from FC6 to Fedora 7 earlier this afternoon. Now when
I first boot it, immediately after printing the "Starting Red Hat Nash" line,
it pauses and over the course of the following two minutes or so it prints the
following error message three times:
ata1:00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
After that it continues booting normally and everything appears to be working
as it should.
How can I fix this?

Thunderbird scam warnings
by Gordon Charrick
I'm subscribed to a private, moderated mail list so there is no chance
of junk email. It's annoying when thunderbird thinks 1/4 of the messages
might be scams. Is there a way to tell it that anything to the list
address is okay?

Is there a defined process/script for creating a set of F7 CD's from the DVD?
by Stanley A. Klein
I have several systems to update to F7. They are in different locations
and an install from some kind of network server is not an option. Some of
the systems have DVD reader drives, but some have only CD drives.
I want to do the same kind of Gnome + KDE install that I have been running
on the machines under FC5. The installs also need to be more than just
desktops. Development tools need to be included, just like on the FC5
installs from CD sets.
If I obtain the DVD (either by download or by purchase) is there a defined
process (like some kind of script) by which I can then create a set of
CD's to do a multiple CD install on the systems that have only CD drives?

"Fedora is a Linux-based operating system that showcases the

If do not agree with this "mission statement" and such, you have no
business using it.
It is as simple as that.

Same goes for driver support. SATA, RAID, SCSI, graphics cards, etc.
You want a stable ABI but new drivers... though.
Unless you are willing to port the new drivers yourself (which is not
always possible), you'll have to choose.
Stable ABI with lacking driver support or better driver support with
unstable ABI.
... Hey, but if you don't agree with me, it's GPL, you are free to
create your own "bleeding edge desktop, stable kernel" distro. Heck, you
can even use RHEL/CentOS as your base for free!

We?
Sorry, I don't agree with you.
Never the less, if your really believe in that "we" part, you should
really consider creating your own distribution, as opposed to trying to
change Fedora to what it will never be.

True.
Though... at least in my case, if Evolution, VIM and/or firefox stops
working for a long duration, it is just as bad as a kernel crash.
