New FC7 install kdm problem on logout
by Gary Stainburn
Hi folks.
I've installed FC7 onto a system that used to run FC5 no problems. However I
now have one annoying problem.
When I boot up or change to init 5 kdm displays and works fine. However, if I
log out kdm fails to re-display. The screen displays 'Mode Not Supported' and
the screen/kayboard etc. hangs. I can ssh from another box and reboot the
computer which then displays the kdm properly again.
I've re-run system-config-display a new times, and it detects the display
adaptor and LCD screen correctly, but then comes up with 'Mode Not Supported'
message again.
Display: S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266]
Monitor: Proview EM-170 detected as CY765
'yum update' says that the system is up to date
Can anyone suggest possible solutions.
Below is the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Unload Ath5k module
by Sieranski, Greg
I have a Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5418 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless PCI
Express Adapter (rev 01)wireless card and at this time the ath5k driver
does not support it. I have been having success using madwifi (ath_pci)
and would like to unload the ath5k module for now. Is it just a simple
modprobe -e ath5k? Will that prevent it from loading back up on startup?
Thanks,
Greg Sieranski

I have got to ask. Exactly what is meant by using NM in manual mode?

how to debug glibc on fedora.
by PawelCarqowski
Hallo group members.
Do You know any document that would be usable for this.
Initially I thought that I could use glibc-debuginfo, but this is optimized and does not have complete debug information. For example there is no debug information for "socket" system call.

package manager problems: rpm db corruption|glibc detected double-linked|etc
by Development discussions related to Fedora
Hi, I started having trouble a few days ago with basic yum and rpm
commands; they would seem to work, but finish with a Segmentation fault.
Recent updates [1]:
Basically, one command would work, spit an error just before finishing.
Any further commands would fail. A reboot would allow another single
command to ~almost complete.
This lead me to rpmdb corruption, solved with [2]
However, after reboots and a short time, it seems to recur. So next time
I fix rpmdb, I add forcefsck and autorelabel incase of
filesystem/selinux issues. This didn't flag any errors.
The machine runs fine using thunderbird. But I might find that after
starting firefox-google-2nd-3rd-4th result page, that a get a bug buddy
report on gecko.
I also noticed twice where gnome-terminal or firefox would no longer
respond to mouse clicks, although thunderbird was OK and numlock
operational. If I clicked away from thunderbird, then the whole desktop
would be unresponsive, and numlock no longer change state.
strl-alt-backspace nor ctrl-alt-delete would achieve anything, and I
ended up having to hw reset.
I also found using package-cleanup --problems that about 50 or more
packages noted as missing their requirements. However, the files are on
disk; they just aren't in the rpmdb. [2] didn't suddenly make it all
good, so I have yum install any missing packages in groups of 5 or so
packages, with apparent success the first time. But then next time I get
errors like: [full log in [3]]
a. Segmentation fault
b. *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/python: corrupted double-linked list:
0x0d897150 ***
c. Fatal Python error: Inconsistent interned string state.
Aborted
Since I have no idea of the cause; once I receive one of the errors, I
restart in runlevel 1-rebuild db-restart.
Love some help with getting it back to it's former reliable self.
DaveT.

Are these i386 packages needed or is there an oversight in RPM packaging?
Many thanks,

libx264.so.56, where art thou?
by David Kramer
I'm trying to get DVD and MP3 playing happening on my new f8 install.
I have both working with mplayer, but mplayer doesn't appear to be
able to navigate DVD menus. I'm trying to install xine nonfree, because
I know xine can do DVD menus. When trying to install the xine nonfree
package, or vlc, I get
"Missing Dependency: libx264.so.56 is needed by package ffmpeg-libs"
I've tried coming at it from a couple of different angles. How can I
get around this?
Thanks.

Firefox, mutt, kicker, konsole crash after FC8 update
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
this is on an AMD64 system, FC8 64bit installed with Livna nVidia
rpms, all updates with yum applied without problems until one week
ago, running KDE.
Last wednesday I go t the "updates available" notification on the
desktop and told the system to upgrade. IIRC, there was some problem
to download the evolution rpm, but I didn't bother since I never use
it, so I told it to go ahead and update. Everything seemed to go fine,
but then:
Firefox would crash or freeze
Konqueror wouldn't start
mutt ran in konsole would segmentation fault every 5/6 messages
yesterday morning, when I powered the PC up again, it failed to boot and
left me with the prompt from which to boot and run fsck
I did, and I noticed it reported several "multiply-claimed blocks in inode"
warnings about:
/usr/lib64/libkgroupwarebase.so.0.0.0
/usr/lib/libkabinterfaces.so.1.0.0
/user/lib/64/kde3/libkontact-kaddressbookplugin.so
after running fsck and rebooting, the problems above seemed
disappeared. Now, after powering up the pc again (KDE session,
again):
X starts, kicker, kmail and konsole crash every time (I'm typing this
from mutt in an xterm which I started from the "run command" graphic
utility)
if I start kicker from the xterm I get:
[marco@pc ~]$ QGDict::hashAsciiKey: Invalid null key
kicker: crashHandler called
KCrash: Application 'kicker' crashing...
QGDict::hashAsciiKey: Invalid null key
trying to start kmail:
> kmail
kmail: relocation error: /usr/lib64/libkleopatra.so.1: symbol _ZN4Kleo18KeySelectionDialogD1Ev, version GLIBCXX_3.4 not defined in file libstdc++.so.6 with link time reference
kate and konqueror, instead, start without problems (though I haven't
done anything with them yet)
Unfortunately, I had no possibility since wednesday to stay at the
computer more than a few minutes every time (if I had had more time
and concentration I would have probably done things differently), and
at this point, given the sequence of events (update partly failed -
forced fsck - another update) I am not sure how to:
- find out _EVERYTHING_ wrong in the system right now (hanging lock or
tmp files, all corrupted binaries, which rpms should be reinstalled,
what else).
- what else to report to help you diagnose the problem
- how to fix it! If I were sure only one package is corrupted, I'd
remove it ignoring warnings and reinstall it right away, but this is
something more serious. Remove all packages updated since wednesday
and then run yum update again?!? No, unless I have confirmation it
makes sense and/or there is no other way
Thank you in advance for any feedback
Marco
