2 out of 4 usb sockets work
by William Murray
Hello all,
I am trying to understand a laptop with 4 USB ports,
apparently identical, but all 4 work under windows and only 2 under F8.
If I look in 'hwbrowser' I see 3 controllers, (2 UHCI and 1 EHCI I
think) but no 'USB UHCI #n' entries like I expect.
cat /proc/bus/usb/devices shows up 3 controllers, and the USB mouse I
have plugged in.
It ALSO shows a device "0baa 0158", which is somehow a Realtek disk (I
don't think there IS one) but not "0bda 8187" (or is it 8189) that I
think the wireless card should be registered as.
Can anyone suggest how to debug this?
Thank you,
Bill

Hi Dave,
You might just be unlucky with a mirror. This release only came out today
on livna, and may be partially updated. Try again..maybe it will work.
I'm waiting for this release on F8, not out there yet...

Lockup
by tony.chamberlain@lemko.com
Someone from my company had the following question/situation:
He ssh's to a remote site (to get there it is a 204.X.X.X address from
the router, but the actual eth0 address is a 192.168.X.X addres once
you get in).
He logs in (via ssh) as root.
He does a few things.
He logs out, and then the system hangs
until a reboot is done.
This is about all the information he told me. Anyway he
wants me to find out if anyone has had a similar
situation or has any idea what is going on? It is
using CentOS 4.5, and going through a router.
Another thing. In addition to an ethernet driver, there is
a driver for another card in the system, whose IP address
is 80.9.130.1. Anytime someone does ifconfig or something
similar it call a stats() function, and in /var/log/messages
there are hunderds of log entries that this function was called
(every 10 minutes).
Anyone have any ideas?

kmod-fglrx issues

In a (mistaken!) attempt to cure some graphics issues with my F7 86_64 install
I removed kmod-fglrx. This was obtained (some months ago now) from Livna. I
foolishly thought I'd be able to uninstall then reinstall. Below is what
happens. I've tried installing the dependencies individually and got nowhere.
Ideas?

Thanks so much, that was definitely the place to start! A few additional
changes on both sides and I am in business.

Good to hear that someone has had success on this front. I, too, have been
trying to get consistent WiFi results. I've been working with three
different NICs, one USB, the other two PCMCIA.
The one one with which I've been successful has been a Netgear WG111US
Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter. However, its performance has been erratic. I can
successfully connect to my WAP, work for a while, and then the connection
drops. I notice that the device gets especially hot and am wondering if
this is the cause for its eventual failure. Comments?
On the PCMCIA front, I've been testing two cards: an old Linksys WPC111
(only 802.11b) and a Netgear WPNT511.
WPC111:
lcpci does not see the Linksys WPC111, but ifconfig -a does. I can assign
a static IP to the WPC111 and use other commands to configure it to work
with my WAP but I get no throughput.
WPNT511:
lscpi identifies the Netgear WPNT511, but ifconfig -a does not. I have
used ndiswrapper to load the appropriate driver and my results are still
the same.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 600m, btw.
I have no problem getting a PCMCIA Netgear Ethernet card (Linksys
EtherFast 10/100 Integrated CardBus PC Card PCM200B) to work, btw. W/o any
droppoff. The built-in Ethernet on the Laptop failed. Apparently, other
Inspiron 600m users have mentioned that the Ethernet port has high failure
rates.
As for wireless, some reviewes mention that the Dell Inspiron 600m has
been shipped with Wifi, either Centrino or a mini PCI card bolted into one
of the bays. This one appears to have neither. Or is there a tool/command
for checking for onboard Centrino.
Much thanks in advance for any replies.

Updated Package Announcements Without Updated RPM Lists
by Brian G. Reid
Hello,
None of the updated package announcements since January 27 have had the
list of updated RPM packages within them. Was this an oversight
or has there been some decision no longer to include the list of
updated RPM's in package announcements?
Take Care,
Brian
