In FC7 if I recall there is caching for host names.
You may wish to toggle it.
Most internet servers are load balanced one way or another
so one lookup goes to one machine and another to another.
When you are 'done' the load balancing changes changes the responsible
hardware on their end and may in fact cause your network connections
to be ill directed as a result of your local cache. Try toggling nscd
on/off to see if that is involved. Internet timeouts are much longer
than we commonly expect. Also double check your name server list,
if one name server in the list is down the timeout will be a min or so.
It can take a bit of work but, you can use wireshark and or strace to watch your network traffic
and program to see what is taking so long (what is different).

Newbie with Login Issues
by Billy Gedney
Hey,
I'm a bit of a newb, so please forgive me in advance. I'm running Fedora 8
on a home-brew P4 2.8 with 1 gig of ram. I am trying to run Adobe's Flash
Media Server, and I was in the middle of streaming, we get like 15 minutes
in it the connection from the encoder goes dead. The box it's self is
alive and everything, I even have internet connectivity, but when I ping the
box, it wont respond... So I reset it.
On the way back up, the Sendmail service decides it's gonna not start. So I
interactive boot, I dont need it, when it fully booted, I stopped it and a
few other services.
All is well now except that every like 10 minutes (we're normally streaming
by this time) the box is unreachable and we restart and now login takes a
serious 15 minutes...
ANY IDEAS?
I'm at a loss..
Thanks.

How to create a button on my task bar to create an xterm?
by Steven W. Orr
Under Core 4, I used to be able to pull somethingf up called kcontrol to
set kde settings? I don't see that anymore. Is it gone?
Also, I had a button I made for myself in the taskbar to create an xterm
or run emacs. That ability to right-click on the task bar and create a
button for a non-KDE app seems to now be gone. Is there a way to now do
this?
TIA

Sound question. It works in run level 5 but not in 3.
by Steven W. Orr
F9: I boot the computer in run level 5 and log in and sound seems to work
ok. I edit /etc/inittab and set the default run level to 3 and reboot.
Then I log in on the text console and run startx. When X comes up I have
no sound.
Why do I not have sound in Run Level 3?
How can I start sound in RL3?
Why does sound seem to be related to X? I used to be able to play a sound
file from the text console.
TIA

libdvdcss [quasi OT, quasi not OT]
by Petrus de Calguarium
I read that rpmfusion, formerly livna, will no longer provide libdvdcss. I have always religiously installed it.
Does this mean that it will no longer be possible to play DVDs in Fedora? I don't rip or copy DVDs, just watch them, so would I actually need libdvdcss?
Do other programs now provide the functionality formerly provided by libdvdcss?

extra harddisk on RAID5
by roland
Hello,
I have a server with 3 Harddisks 74Gb Raid5
I would like to install a 4th disk as a backup.
I never did this before. What will happen when I plug this disk in,
will it install itself?
how will it appear?
When one of the disks should fail in the future, can I pull out this 4th
disk and plug it in as replacement for the failing disk?
Or there some things I have to take care of?
....
Thanks for your help

OpenOffice is anyone having trouble?
by Alex Makhlin
I ask again,
Is anyone having trouble running OpenOffice on Fedora 9 KDE 4.1.2? Any
app that I try to open, on any of my Fedora 9 machines, will not open!
This has to be a Fedora problem for non of my Fedora machines can open
one app. Anyone know why? I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Alex

password question.
by Steven W. Orr
Under F9, I want to create an account such that the user will be required
to change the password on login, but I don't have control over how soon
(or late) the user will get to that first login. Is there a way to do it?
The passwd command didn't look like it had anything useful.
TIA
