X with no KDE
by Dave Feustel
Is it possible to run X with no KDE software installed?
If yes, how would the KDE software be deleted?
(And how would it be restored if I changed my mind?)
Thanks.

system-config-keyboard depends on firstboot?
by Alan Evans
I have a system with extremely limited mass storage. So I went hunting
for anything I might remove to save disk space. Anyway, I thought to
myself, "Self, firstboot doesn't do anything useful anymore; let's
remove it!"
But yum tells me that removing firstboot will take
system-config-keyboard with it. Not that I necessarily need
system-config-keyboard, but I'm perplexed -- I would have thought that
the dependency was the other way around.
Does anybody understand why this odd dependency?
By the way, the system is a EeePC 900A with 4GB of flash for an
internal "disk." And I have to say, I'm extremely pleased, overall.
Everything just works, even the wireless. And I don't even have any
complaints about NetworkManager, if that's possible. I haven't had to
fool with a single config file yet.

after rsync restore - cannot login
by Kevin Kempter
Hi All;
I did a backup of a test Fedora 10 install as follows:
1) installed Fedora 10 and applied no updates
2) booted into single user mode and as root ran this:
rsync -av <dir> /stage/backup
I wrapped the above rsync command in a script where <dir> is replaced with the
root (/) dir's I want backed up. Basically everything except the following:
/proc
/dev
/sys
/stage
Then I rebooted, and ran a yum update, installed a new kernel, many packages,
etc
Then as a test I booted back into single user mode and as root ran this:
rsync -av --delete /stage/backup/<dir> /
again the above command was in a script where <dir> was replaced with the same
list of root (/) dirs as I used for the backup
once complete I rebooted and now I cannot login, I get to a login screen but a
login just takes me back to the login screen again.
I booted into single user mode, and ran init 3
at the login prompt I tried to login as root and some text flashes by the
screen too quickly to read however I did catch the phrase 'permission denied'
What have I done wrong ?
Thanks in advance...

ATI driver installation
by Vincent
Hello,
I have an HP zv6000 with ATI mobility radeon xpress 200 series the
present driver is ati2mtag.sys Apr 01,2005. I installed F10 every things
went perfect and worked fine, but after the first update to
kernel-2.6.27.7.134 the screen gets fool of horizontal line just before
entering the PW. I was able to boot by selecting the previous kernel,
kernel-2.6.27.5.117, eventually the second update came which I was
hopping that it may correct the previous problem but it didn't happen.
I suspect that I may need an update driver, I checked ATI web side and
found a file "ati-driver-installer-8-12-x86.x86_64.run" and the
instruction file "linux_cat812-inst.pdf". I got stuck at the first
instruction "sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh" not found
Any body there can help? I will appreciate very much.
Thank you

To turn Plymouth off?
by don fisher
How can one disable Plymouth? I prefer to see the boot sequence. I
recently had a "blue screen of death" for about 10 minutes while my
disks were doing a mount limit forced fsck. Beauty is in the eye of the
beholder:-)
Something also changed between F9 and F10 with upstart. In F9 I was able
to comment out the lines in /etc/event.d/prefdm associated with:
exec /etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
and the system would drop through to a text interface. Now it hangs.
What is the best way to avoid using prefdm? I do not mind typing startx.

PDF files in Firefox 3.0.5 in F10?
by mike cloaked
For a long time I have set my firefox so that when clicking on a link to a
pdf file in Firefox it will open the file in acroread outside of the browser
on the desktop.
I noticed that in F10 with a fully updated system, that despite the correct
behaviour being set in Edit->Preferences->Applications that Firefox now only
allows the option to download the pdf file! This is in the Gnome desktop and
does exactly the same on two different machines running the same system (and
SElinux is enabled)
Does anyone know if this is a bug or some weird intended behaviour in
Forefox 3.0.5 ?

how to force my laptop external video refresh rate to 50 Hz?
by Robert P. J. Day
for the sake of testing an external video device, i'd like to force
the video refresh rate on my aging WUXGA dell inspiron 9200 to 50 Hz.
i can see from the xorg.conf man page that the Monitor section has a
VertRefresh option, but my current xorg.conf has no Monitor section
whatever -- i'm assuming X is then just faking up a default one.
is there a quick way to force a lower refresh rate? specifically,
on the DVI port. thanks.
