using xsane as non-root user
by Amadeus W.M.
Precisely what is the reason xsane can't be used as non-root users?
I have a usb-connected Brother all-in-one. In F8 I was able to use it as
myself. No longer so in F9, with an I/O error which I suspect was due to
the 660 permissions on the appropriate /dev/usb device. I can use it as
root just fine.
In what obscure udev/hal file do I have to change 660 to 666? I found
ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sg[0-9]*", BUS=="scsi", ATTRS{type}=="3|6", SYMLINK
+="scanner scanner-%k", MODE="0660"
in /etc/udev/rules.d/40-redhat.rules
Is this the right place? Should I?
In fact, I just changed the permissions manually to /dev/usbdev* and I'm
getting the same error:
Failed to open device `brother2:bus4;dev2':
Error during device I/O.
Any help?

F9: Creating partitions
by Dan Thurman
Hmm... F9 is new to me...
1) I am planning to partition a 750GB drive as follows:
a) /media/vista 50GB ntfs primary
b) /media/w2kpro 50GB ntfs primary
c) /boot 200MB ext3 primary
d) -------------------------------- Extended
i) / 200GB ext3
ii) /media/wapp1 100GB ntfs
iii) /media/fapp1 150GB ext3
2) I downloaded F9 Gnome Live ISO and burned a CD,
booted up and started F9 installation.
a) Selected "Custom Partition"
b) Tried to create "vista" nfts partition but
there is no ntfs selection available in the
'File System Type' dropdown list, all I see
is 'vfat' So, at this point I selected vfat
and continued to partition to 50GB, primary.
c) Same with (b) above, but for w2kpro
d) Created /boot partition - but noticed that there
was a "switch" in the device - /boot became
/dev/sda1 instead of /dev/sda3 as I would have
expected. Why is that? Don't I get to say
exactly what device I want partitioned and in
what order? Ignoring this, I continued anyway,
hoping this will not screw up boot access to
'vista' or 'w2kpro'. So, I continued on.
e) Now, to create the 'Extended partition'? - hmm,
there is no 'Extended' in 'File System Type'
dropdown list - so where is it? What is 'efi'?
"Extended FIle system"?
Up to this point - I don't know what to do. Should I
choose 'Physical Volume (LVM)' instead and use this
pathway instead of the way I am going as planned?
Please advise?
Thanks-
Dan

Bug in Thunderbird?
by Mark Haney
I don't know if this is a bug in Tbird, or if it's just my system here
doing something funny with the display, but when I click 'View' ->
'Headers' -> 'All' I get the message headers, but they appear all the
way down to the bottom of the screen and there's no way to scroll
through them. Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

usb internet hookup
by Frank Cox
My wife is off visiting her mother and she took her Fedora 8 laptop with her.
I set up network manager on it so it will just log into any available Internet
connection without any user intervention required. It works fine here.
She just sent me this: "I don't know if I will be able to use my laptop.
Esthel's modem is linked to her computer with a USB cable. Strange. I
tried to use both cable that's linked to the router but none worked. Maybe I'm
doing something wrong or as Esthel said we have to install something on
my computer but who knows if it has Linux."
The Internet there is a DSL connection from Mauritius Telecoms. I've never
dealt with a setup like that, so does anyone know where to go from here?
Perhaps she's just out of luck?
