It depends on the brand of your drives: NEC/OPTIARC can be flashed natively
in Linux
thanks to binflash (it can use both exe and bin files).
In other cases, you have to use something like a "Windows live cd" (I don't
remember the link, but you need a copy of the XP install CD anyway) or a
good old DOS floppy boot disk.

selinux advises restorecon unknown?
by Dave Burns
I just installed FC8 x86_64 on a Dell Precision T5400. I then
installed nmap. I ran nmap. SELinux signalled that something was
wrong. I looked in the log, then I ran sealert -l 47<blah-blah-blah>
and it advises me to "try to restore the default system file context
for <Unknown>, restorecon -v <Unknown>".
a) What should I do? I am guessing
# touch /.autorelabel
# shutdown -r now
b) is this a bug?
I googled (selinux "restorecon -v unknown" bugzilla fedora). Lots of
hits, no general solution I could find. Many with similar problems
eventually figure out which file actually is causing selinux
unhappiness, but I have no clue how they figured it out. Anyone spare
a clue?
Dave
side note - after that I ran yum -y update, the screen has gone black
and does not respond to anything, including cntl-alt-del or
cntl-alt-backspace. No fair!

Problems With Newest Update of tcl-1:8.5.2-1.fc9
by Jeffrey D. Yuille
Hello,
I am having problems with the newest update of tcl. It is causing
a problem with aMSN (which by the way, completely blew up because of
this upgrade). I've tried to uninstall this version of tcl and
reinstall the older version but every time I do this, it continues to be
updated to the newest version, which aMSN cannot use. My question is
this: How do I roll back to the previous version (tcl-1:8.5.1-4.fc9)
without it automatically being updated to the newest one
(tcl-1:8.5.2-1.fc9)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the matter with fedora 9?
by fedora
Hi every
What is the matter with fedora 9?
it introduced a NetworkManager which prohibits networking.
programs are acessible only as root user: xsane just does nothing as
non-root user.
openoffice blocks its drop-downs in the main menu for 20 seconds, if you
are not root. if you are root, everything is as good/as bad as with
fedora 8, thanks very much.
openldap breaks down every now and then, and stays with a corrupt
sleepycat database, which is not revoverable.
could the relevant persons please provide an update to fedora 9 as soon
as possible? thanks very much.

Re: GRUB menu video mode
by Herbert Carl Meyer
Removing the splash= produces a pure text menu that the TV displays
properly. Thank you, Mikkel. TV's, even modern flat screens, make lousy
computer monitors. The basic purpose of this system is a DVR.
Jeremy K added the splash to grub to improve it, and as an advertising
vector. Side effect was my problem, which is fixable.
As far as grub sucking, it was written for a purpose by somebody else.
If you think it sucks, write something better. If you can't write, shut
up, and go away.
Excuse me, rude people make me rude. I am very good at being rude, you
should try me in person. Bring a helmet, and some bandages.

Firefox problem
by david walcroft
I tried to start firefox on the command line, and this is what I get.
[david@reddwarf ~]$ /usr/lib/firefox-3.0/firefox
The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadName (named color or font does not exist)'.
(Details: serial 738 error_code 15 request_code 45 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
I don't understand what is happening, how do I fix it.
Thanks david

remote desktop
by Amadeus W.M.
What's the standard way of viewing my desktop remotely using a secure/
encrypted connection? I imagine I have to use vnc, but is that encrypted?
Do I use a ssh tunnel or something? VPN? I need a little direction to get
started.
Thanks!

USB keyboard stopped working
by stan
Hi,
I downloaded and recompiled the kernel source RPM for the 2.6.25.6-55
kernel. I did this because Fedora 9 won't recognize DVDs burned in my
DVDRW under Fedora 7. After doing the make menuconfig and recompiling
and installing, the resulting kernel runs fine, but it won't use my USB
keyboard. When I plug in a PS2 keyboard it works fine. And while a PS2
mouse that was working before works fine, a USB trackball fails to run
also. Both devices are recognized when plugged in, and the keyboard
works during the BIOS test but doesn't in either console or X.
From dmesg,

I used to get the "unable to enumerate USB device" message with the
stock Fedora 9 kernel as well, but the keyboard worked.
The change failed to fix the DVD problem, so I could probably go back to
the stock kernel, but I removed a ton of garbage I don't use, and added
some things I want to use, and the performance seems to be snappier, so
I would rather still use it. I'm going to be modifying the DVD drivers
to try to get them to work in Fedora 9 with my DVDRW anyway.
Is there some obvious fix for this problem that will enable the USB
devices to work? My wrists will thank you. :-)

A way to use wine to run eprom updates for DVD drives?
by stan
Hi,
The subject says it all. Is there a way to use wine to update the BIOS
on DVD drives (and other devices)? When I tried it, it just hung the
process.
Or another way, without using Windows (I don't have any MS OS)?
