Hi all!
I have got some lectures downloaded from a University. They are all rar
files. Upon extracting them, I got .VCR files. How to play them ? When I
contacted them, they said extract the files using unrar (which I did),
and then use Java Participant Application to play them. They suggest
AT&T Participant application for Windows platform.
What do I do for Fedora ? Anyone can give me any help here ? I am not
able to follow what is Java participant application.
oh yes, i did try playing with all stuff like totem, mplayer, xine, vlc.
none worked.
regards,
amit.

Best guide for Fedora 9 ever !
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
this guide is the best guide for Fedora 9!
http://fedoraguide.info/index.php/Main_Page
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Best_guide_for_Fedora_9_ever
How to setup MP3 and Video codecs, ATI and Nvidia drivers,
CompizFusion, etc... you need it they got it :)
Probably most of your question about Fedora 9 are answered there and
the solutions are simple.
There are some errors still left from Fedora 8 guide, so please create
wiki account and help clean it out and if you have some new tips &
tricks please add them.
For example the date for release of Fedora 9 was still left from Fedora 8 :)
And this is the latest one I'm correcting right now:
To see what Fedora 8 will look like check out the tour!!! (but the
link goes correctly to Fedora 9 tour page)
Cheers,
Valent.

awstats munged httpd rights in SElinux, how to fix?
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
Wanting to see who might have visited my simple web page, I installed awstats
from the fedora repo today.
The awstats selinux helper seems to be an empty file, yumex win't dl it or
install it even when checked.
>From the yumex screen:
7:59:02 : Package Queue:
17:59:02 : Packages to install
17:59:02 : ---> awstats-selinux-6.7-1.fc8.noarch
17:59:02 : Preparing for install/remove/update
17:59:02 : --> Preparing for install
17:59:02 : Package awstats-selinux is obsoleted by awstats, trying to install
awstats-6.8-1.fc8.noarch instead
17:59:02 : Package awstats-6.8-1.fc8.noarch already installed and latest
version
17:59:06 : Error in Dependency Resolution
17:59:06 : Success - empty transaction
which is self-explanatory.
But on attempting to look at my page at localhost, I get connection refused.
So I as root, do:service httpd restart
Stopping httpd: [FAILED]
Starting httpd: (13)Permission denied: httpd: could not open error log
file /etc/httpd/logs/error_log.
Unable to open logs
[FAILED]
And an selinux denial that says I can fix it with this:
#> setsebool -P httpd_unified=1
But I've now executed that line several times without success.
I've also gone through the httpd stuff and made much of it 0644 and owned by
apache:apache.
Obviously I'm suffering from the local heat and missing the flashing red light
here, so what is next folks? It was all working AFAIK before I installed
awstats, when running kernel 2.6.26 just yesterday, but now booted to
2.6.27-rc1. Dunno which is the culprit. Help!

Kernel Version 2.6.15 in any Fedora Version ?
by "G"
Hi
Has Fedora shipped the 2.6.15 series of kernel by default ? I checked
FC4 and FC5. FC4 by default uses 2.6.11 and FC5 uses 2.6.16. For some
development and testing purposes i need 2.6.15 so can i load FC4 and
download kernel 2.6.15 from kernel.org and compile it ? I feel
upgradation is better than downgrading (i.e, by installing FC5 and
then downgrading to 2.6.15)
Please let me know
Thanks,
Regards,
Balaji

automount and autorun
by Maurizio Marini
My target is to use an "autorun" bash script when an usb pen is automounted
like http://linlog.skepticats.com/content/udevautorun/ describe.
With recent kernels hotplug is vanished replaced by udev; there is
no /etc/dev.d or /etc/hotplug, anymore.
I am not able to find a place where put bash script to be executed.
I read tons of google udev links w/out result, yet.
Any advice would be apreciated

Double checking grub-install -- revisited ??
by Bill Case
Hi;
I have started this thread again as a new thread. The previous "Double
checking grub-install ??" lead off in all kinds of plausible directions.
I think I now have more of a focus.
To recap:
I am getting a double Fedora grub splashimage at boot. I have a dual
boot system with WindowsXP on sda and Fedora 9 on sdb. I have some
experience with installing grub but made a typo type mistake during a
grub install a month ago and I think (??) that might have been the root
of my double splashimage problem.
To check the mbr, I ran on /dev/sda:
~]# dd bs=512 count=1 if=/dev/sda | od -Ax -tx1z -v
it returned:
...
000160 7c be 85 7d e8 40 00 eb 0e be 8a 7d e8 38 00 eb
>|..}.@.....}.8..<
000170 06 be 94 7d e8 30 00 be 99 7d e8 2a 00 eb fe 47
>...}.0...}.*...G<
000180 52 55 42 20 00 47 65 6f 6d 00 48 61 72 64 20 44 >RUB .Geom.Hard
D<
000190 69 73 6b 00 52 65 61 64 00 20 45 72 72 6f 72 00 >isk.Read.
Error.<
0001a0 bb 01 00 b4 0e cd 10 ac 3c 00 75 f4 c3 00 00 00
>........<.u.....<
...
[Notice the GRUB string on the second and third line and Error on the
fourth line]
Then, I ran on /dev/sdb:
]# dd bs=512 count=1 if=/dev/sdb | od -Ax -tx1z -v
it returned:
...
000160 7c be 85 7d e8 40 00 eb 0e be 8a 7d e8 38 00 eb
>|..}.@.....}.8..<
000170 06 be 94 7d e8 30 00 be 99 7d e8 2a 00 eb fe 47
>...}.0...}.*...G<
000180 52 55 42 20 00 47 65 6f 6d 00 48 61 72 64 20 44 >RUB .Geom.Hard
D<
000190 69 73 6b 00 52 65 61 64 00 20 45 72 72 6f 72 00 >isk.Read.
Error.<
0001a0 bb 01 00 b4 0e cd 10 ac 3c 00 75 f4 c3 00 00 00
>........<.u.....<
...
[Notice the GRUB string on the second and third line as well, and Error
on the fourth line]
Could this double grub be the source of my problem ?
If it is, how do I remove it (from sdb -- I presume)?
Others have suggested that the double splashimage is just a video mode
switch but then how do I account for the grub appearing on both mbr's

xscreensaver on dual-monitor setup
by oleksandr korneta
Hello,
I have a Twin-view configuration setup with the LCD monitor and TV. It
used to be that xscreensaver treated those independently and launched an
individual whatever_the_screensaver_was_selected on each of them. After
the recent update of xscreensaver-gl-extras-gss-5.06-2.fc8 and
xscreensaver-gl-extras-5.06-2.fc8 my setup is treated as one common area
and a single screensaver is launched in the middle. It looks kinda ugly,
because of the significantly different resolution between the display
devices.
So I am wondering whether the current behavior this is a bug or feature
and is it possible to turn back the old behavior without rolling back to
the previous version? Maybe some command-line parameter?

I'm running FC7 x86_64 and FC8 i386 on x86_64 hardware, should this matter.

Acroread Plugin vs. Fedora-8 and Firefox-2
by Jonathan Ryshpan
When a PDF page is displayed via the Acroread plugin in Firefox, the
(sub) window containing the displayed PDF info never gets focus. This
makes it impossible, among other things, to search the PDF using the
Acroread search function. If I save the PDF to a file and then display
it using acroread, the window gets focus in the normal way and search
works perfectly.
What is going on? How can this be fixed?
Thanks - jon

Creating a default keyring with passwd.
by Aaron Konstam
One of the problems with reinstalling Fedora every 6 months is I can't
remember what I did before but I know I never had this problem before.
On anew installation I configured evolution. When I tried to run it it
asked for the POP passwd then wanted to know the passwd to open the
default keyring. But I am lost in remembering how to do this. I know it
must of happened in earlier versions but I am drawing a blank on what to
do to resolve this.
I need advice.
