change fonts DPI in gdm (Fedora 8)
by David Hláčik
Hello,
my Fedora login screen is showing fonts with DPI larger than 96DPI.
Here is the question, how can i change font properties, currently DPI for
login screen ?
I have no chance to edit it from gnome config or so ,becouse this is Fedora
9 with downgraded X Window System from Fedora 8 as ATI drivers suck and are
not available for xorg provided by Fedora 9.
Thanks in advance!

I think you should check out Debian. They have the exact opposite policy.
q;o) I've been running Debian about as long as Fedora and I've upgrade one
or twice.

Making changes to compiz/desktop effects
by Doctor Who
I have Fedora 9 installed with an nvidia graphics card. 3d is enabled
and I have desktop effects working.
However, I'm unable to change the settings using CCSM. For example,
if I turn animation on and say that I want fire when windows close,
this doesn't work (same fade effect is still seen.) Or if I want 3d
windows when I rotate the cube, I enable this with CCSM, but it still
doesn't happen. It's like the settings are not respected.
Anyone have this setup and working? If so, can you tell me how?
Thanks.

NFS mount points (directories) inaccessible in RunLevel 3
by potat0
I have seen the following issue on several and current Redhat Linux distros. I'd like to understand the problem and avoid it. More importantly, I want to fix the problem on my current server.
As root, I created 5 directories under /mnt and mounted remote directories via NFS. All was well for weeks.
I added a new hard drive (/dev/sdb) and mounted it under /tmp to move files onto it. I umounted then remounted /dev/sdb1 in it's final location (/web.)
I then restarted the server and found the directory entries under /mnt were not visible and therefore, unable to be NFS mount points. The new drive mounted fine.
I dropped the server into Run Level 2 (from 3) and could see the five directories under /mnt.
This is driving me crazy, thus I am missing something. Can someone identify that something?

Hello World,
... I probably run an operating system install longer
than most. Of the
machines at home and work that come to mind, one is
running 5, two are at
6, one at 7, with the latest running 8. Due to
several bad experiences,
newer versions are installed only when the machine
can be taken down and
the disks reformatted. Running an older version is
not the end of the
world, but a 13 month support cycle seams a bit
short. ...

I know this is the Redhat list but, if you need
longer term support, then take a look at Ubuntu
server edition. Every two years they desiganate a
release "LTS" (Long Term Support) and support it for
five years. They just released the latest "8.04 LTS"
version this spring. Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS, the first
maintenance update was released in July. So now is
probably a pretty good time to give it a try:

after receiving above, and drive/disk info below, then more

>> The media is -R, but when I bought it I choose a -+R.
use '+r' only. someone may have shifted a '-r' into '+r' section to
catch you. check container label, if it shows '+r' and you have '-r',
you need to return them.
**_do_not_** get r/w disk. they can go bad during reusing and are not
worth what you save. they are ok for periodic backups, but only if you
make 3 sets or do not mind chancing a loss of data.
mag tape is only dependable r/w media and even then you can lose data.

open k3b, select 'settings > configure k3b > devices' this will show
drive specs. note what it can read and what it can burn.
for cd/dvd disks, with disk in tray, in upper left of k3b, you will see
a disk icon and drive listed. right click on icon, note menu. select
'disk info', this information will tell you what disk specs are.

ok. you need k3b on system that has drive giving problems or use google.
with k3b, do above information checks on it also. it is possible that
drive is not able to read dvd type that you have burned.

SoundBlaster USB audio harshly distored
by Claude Jones
I have run the Alsa Information Script and the results can be seen here:
http://pastebin.ca/1092537
This an Asus G2S-B2 laptop - Core Duo, 3GB ram
The USB soundcard is the SB0300 (Audigy NX 2)
Almost always, when I fire up the computer, I get very harsh distorted sound
from the Soundblaster, though rarely, it will come out real clean; when it
does, it never lasts more than a few seconds, and then the distortion returns.
A headset plugged directly into the Audigy produces clean sound every time.
The intel audio that's built in to the laptop produces clean sound, always.
It's not very satisfying because the built in speakers aren't very loud, and
I'm slightly hard of hearing. The output of the SoundBlaster Audigy is being
fed to a pair of Bose speakers, whose quality, as well as volume, is far
better than the built-in speakers. I'd read somewhere about changing the
default sample rate from 44100 to 48000, which I tried to do in .asoundrc with
the following:
pcm.rate_convert {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0"
rate 48000
}
}
This had no effect. Any help gratefully appreciated...

ssh / bind help?
by William John Murray
Hello guys,
I have 5 machines in a home network, all running F9, with
named/bind providing local DNS.
A couple of weeks ago a problem appeared: ssh hangs for internal
connections. No doubt
I had misconfigured the thing years ago, as bind mystifies me, but an
update must have triggered it.
The problem is that reverse lookups hang forever; here is the end of
"ssh -vvv XXX"
debug1: Next authentication method: gssapi-with-mic
debug3: Trying to reverse map address 168.254.0.251.
Note the 'dot' at the end.
If I try nslookup 168.254.0.251 it works fine, but 168.254.0.251. does not.
Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong? Here is named.conf, in case
that helps.
Thank you!
