LVMs really frustrating me...
by linux guy
I'm trying to copy data from an old laptop drive to a new one.
I spent a lot of time trying to mount /dev/sdb3, which I thought was the
data part of the old hard drive. After a period of time, I found it to be
a logical partition, not an ext3 partition.
/sbin/fdisk /dev/sdb
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/sdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x9aa39aa3
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 1 2076 16675438+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sdb2 2077 2101 200812+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdb3 2102 9729 61271910 8e Linux LVM
I did a bunch of digging and learning and I found this:
# /usr/sbin/lvdisplay /dev/sdb3
File descriptor 5 left open
File descriptor 7 left open
WARNING: Duplicate VG name VolGroup00: Existing
YqG9FW-dYws-fSyZ-9lHS-ABjH-NuA5-GimBgI (created here) takes precedence over
M7hbJ2-PNaC-5B8V-7VL8-vsWy-XuD0-LvkXVK
Volume group "sdb3" not found
>From this I conclude that my computer has 2 LVs of VolGroup00 and in fact,
it does. sda2 and sdb3.
I was perfectly competent at mounting and working with regular
partitions. But these LVMs are a different matter. How does one rename
the partition so that there aren't 2 the same and then mount it ? There is
no LV option in mount. How does one fix the fact that there are 2 VGs with
the same name ?
I don't need to use LVs. Is there a way to convert a working system to use
regular partitions ? I tried gparted, but it doesn't work with LVs.
Thanks.

Your favorite Music/Video player?
by Dan Thurman
I have been using Amarok for awhile, but I find
it so frustrating to use when it comes to updating
tags - it seems to do a very poor job reading/updating
the audio file tags. I want to switch to something
else that is more reliable, Amarok crashes alot esp.
under heavy load.
I liked Amarok's layout/list and other nifty features
but it is getting to the point that I am unable to
consistently keep my tags straight. Amarok seems
to have trouble handling ID3 tags (I use Audio Tags
Tools externally in attempts to force tags they way I
want them to be and ATT supports ID3 v1.0
and v2.0) but Amarok has a nasty habit of
reading these tags improperly and/or inconsistently
so it seems, so I am ready to move on.
What do you recommend as a replacement?
Thanks!

I think this should help.

firefox: choose a profile
by oleksandr korneta
fresh install of fedora 9 x86_64. Firefox is the default browser. Every
attempt to open the link from any application outside the firefox
(homepage link in "About" window of any program, link from email message
in thunderbird, conversation window in pidgin) brings up the firefox
profile chooser window, asking "what profile do you want to use?".
Obviously, selecting the current profile does not work because "it is
currently in use" o_O
"Copy-paste" the links into firefox's address bar works, but having to
do that every time is extremely annoying.
yes, I've seen such things before, and most of us had to write our own
firefox-remote script to enjoy the flawless work, but it was like... in
2004!!! I thought this thing has been solved for some time now.
googling brings nothing -- apparently I'm the only one with this problem
under F9.
Any suggestions?

I'm running F9 x86_64 and F8 i386 on x86_64 hardware, should this matter.

google-earth problem
by Gene Heskett
Greetings all;
I hadn't run GoogleEarth in a couple of months, and when I try to run it now,
I'm getting this message:
[~]# googleearth
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try running with LIBGL_THROTTLE_REFRESH and LIBL_SYNC_REFRESH unset.
^C
And its hung on the initial postcard sized window until I ctl-c it.
Anybody have a clue? Machine is F8, ATI 9200SE with radeon driver, AMD
XP-2800, uptodate as of an hour ago.

Fedora 9 support for the XFS file system
by Peter J. Stieber
I was using a 1 TB LaCie Big Disk
(http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10923) and the board in
the drive died. I took the two hard drives that were in the drive (SATA
500 GB each Raid 0 using the XFS file system) and got them mounted in a
Fedora 9 x86_64 box. Now I'm having trouble with the drives.
Are XFS utilities like
xfs_check
xfs_repair
xfsdump
available on Fedora 9?
I tried looking on the Fedora website, but I couldn't figure out how to
answer this question myself. Any pointers?
TIA,
Pete

Migrate back to FC9 ? Easiest way ?
by linux guy
I'm getting a new laptop today and I have to migrate my current Linux
install to the new hard drive on it. It has a 64 bit processor. I'm
thinking that while I am doing the migration I might just as well
install F9 instead of F10 and then migrate the data from my F10
installation to the new F9 installation.
How hard is it to move the data from F10 back to an F9 installation ?
Thanks
