Re: Last FC10 Kernel update - machine locks up after a fews hours or a day
by KC8LDO
Here is a copy of more of the log file below.
Seems like various services are segment-faulting in the same system file -
"libc-2.9.so". I think this was
also one of the files that got updated the last time if I remember right.

Last FC10 Kernel update - machine locks up after a fews hours or a day
by KC8LDO
Since the last Fedora 10 kernel update from a couple of days ago my stable,
up to then, FC 10 box now locks up regularly.
The only thing I see in the log file is the message below:
Oct 4 09:01:01 localhost kernel: crond[26192] general protection ip:9317f4
sp:bfdff2d8 error:0 in libnss_files-2.9.so[930000+b000]
I see quite a few of these messages.
Is this the reason why I'm seeing lockups?
I found I may have to reboot the machine at least twice in a row to
get it back to what appears to be a normal functioning state. The first
reboot required the "Big Red Switch" since Nothing was working.
As a test I removed the crond daemon, using yum extender, and then
reinstalled it to see how it goes. Until I did the double reboot above even
yum wouldn't work, complained about a python module being missing.

Re: F11 and CD failure

I'm having similar issues today.
I built a new computer, and installed Fedora 11 with standard 6 cd images.
This computer has 2 cd drives.
Now I try to use my cd drives, and I get some pretty crazy results:
: Some music CDs auto-mount to my desktop, some don't
: Some music CDs are detected by Audio CD Extractor, some aren't
(Applications -> Sound -> Audio CD Extractor)
: Fedora 11 doesn't detect LIVE CDs. I tried to run F10 LIVE CD / several
Ubuntu LIVE CDs, and Fedora 11 still boots normall.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should seriously consider using a virtual WINXP setup. I have one
program that I MUST run in XP. I gave up on the WIN box, and installed
it using VirtualBox. Printing was a little weird to set up but works
nicely to 2 different network connected printers. (reported here if you
search the archive). I do not need sound, so it is untested but
everything else works. And boot is waaayyy shorter in the virtual setup.
Uses only 5Gig of disk space. And no messing with grub and mbr...

ibus still broken
by Stuart McGraw
I asked here a few days ago about ibus
which broke after I did a yum update.
No one responded but I saw some other posts
about different problems with ibus so I
waited until some new updates appeared.
However after upgrading again just now, it
is still broken -- still no input editor
appears when I type the enable sequence.
However now the (new) ibus icon says "no
input window" when left-clicked.
Is ibus ever going to work? I write non-
english emails everyday and Fedora is
useless to me without a working ibus.
At this point I wonder if I should blow
off Fedora and and just return to Windows?

thunderbird 3b4 accounts problem
by brian
I've just installed TB3b4 (because 3b3 was driving me nuts). I use IMAP,
so on startup, it proceeded to download everything (although I'm pretty
sure 3b3 had already done that). Unfortunately, it appears to have
screwed things up. I have several accounts; they're all listed on the
left side, but I have just a single Inbox at the top that contains
everything from the Inbox of each account.
Does anyone know the safest way to back out of this mess?
And, is this the "correct" behaviour? If so, I'm not a fan. Is there
some way to start up TB without having it inflict its "Smart Folder"
functionality on me?

Missing icon in F11
by Antonio M
I realized that System monitor (although installed) was missing in my
menu (I wouls say that at a certain point it has been deleted during
some update).
so using System/Prefernces/Menus I added a new item to exixting menu,
but I couldn't find the correct icon on my PC....where should be the
correct icon be located???
I found only utilities-system-monitor.svg in
/usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/apps.
I guess that it is a mistake of alacarte....
Any idea???

Preventing ConsoleKit from interrupting audio when switching consoles.
by William F. Acker WB2FLW +1 303 722 7209
Hi all,
I use speech output for reading the screen. Currently, I'm using
espeak compiled to use portaudio. Whenever I switch consoles, I have to
wait a few seconds for audio output to resume. I understand that
ConsoleKit is responsible for the delay while it figures out if I'm the
same user and should be allowed to use the audio device.
If anyone knows how to disable this behavior, or knows fore sure that
ConsoleKit can't be configured to accomplish this, I'd really like to hear
about it. With respect, what I don't need to hear about is how desirable
folks think the current behavior is and how I should learn to love it too.
Pulseaudio won't help either, until it can be made to run
system-wide.
TIA.
