Did I really install Kmod-Nvidia ?

There are all sorts of instructions as to how to install Kmod-Nvidia on
Fedora, but I thought yum would do a better job of guessing my
configuration (x86_64, 9400 GT) to get the most up-to-date correct package
and getting everything right. So, I just typed:
yum install kmod-nvidia
Now, /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this:

The file is only a few minutes old... So, I suppose it's a new config for
the Kmod driver. But the process was so transparent, I can't help but
wonder if all those modifications to the kernel that I read about in the
doc have been made.
If so, why not provide the documentation that all that is needed is to
type the yum command?
The Nouveau driver worked very well and, since I'm not too sure I'll
install 3D, maybe I could have kept it. But my screen kept blanking once
in a while for a few seconds. This happened with my previous computer too
-- it had an old ATI card, the same monitor and a very standard open
source driver for ATI -- but not so often and not for so long: it was just
a quick blank. I thought this might fix the problem.
Also, I intend to install a TV card and, it anything doesn't work, I'm sure
the first suggestion from Nvidia will be to install their driver. As the
material I buy is only on a one week money back guarantee, I prefer to
make sure everything works in advance.
Also, as it often happens when I download new packages, there was a socket
error and a long (~ 1-2 min) halt before another server took over. (I
forgot to save the console screen before I rebooted, but the name
"liberty" was part of it.)
After the installation finished, the rx/tx light of the modem began
flashing very fast as if there was a download occuring... or maybe an
upload if some information on the installation has to be sent back to
rpmfusion or nvidia.
No indication of what was going on appeared onscreen. Is this anything to
be concerned about? Any idea What this transfer was about?

Try the following:
$ alsamixer -c0
then
$ pavucontrol
after adjusting those to your preference save your settings with
$ su -c '/sbin/alsactl store'
put in your password and settings should be saved for next reboot, ***unless*** an update(s) breaks your configuration and let us hope that those things don't happen :)

Problems with 3COM 3C900Combo

Hi all Fedora users,
I have just joined this list. I am running the latest Fedora but I can't get
my 3C900Combo networking card to work. I can see that the card is installed
but no IP-address is asigned to it and I can't set it. So I think that there
is a bug in that driver. Any other user out there who have a solution for
this?

RAGE XL Framebuffer

Hi all
I know that is not a specific question about Fedora, but I can't find answer on the kernel mailing list.
Is somebody having server with integrated ATI RAGE XL video card? Is it possible to patch the kernel to support this video card? If I add VGA=791 in my grub.conf, I will have a resolution of 1024x768 which is good, but the display is very slow (especially when the screen is scrolling). If I use I this: "video=aty128fb:1024x768@70" it will not work. I'm using kernel 2.4.22 but I will try 2.6.0-test11 today.
If somebody has a patch, a link or anything else that can help me, it will be appreciated.

Soundblaster

I have two similar PC (old Pentium but workin fine)
In Pc no.1 I upgraded from RH8 to Fedora and it went fine: Soundblaster
is working fine
In Pc no.2 I made a fresh installation but in redhat-sound-config Fedora
doesn't see any card, that was working on Redhat 9 after soundconfig...
Where is the trick?? I assume that my Sounblaster is an old 16...but
fine on a router/firewall.

Alpine will not show attachments

Hi,
I am running alpine-2.00-1.fc10.x86_64 on an F10 box. If I get a message with
an html or file attachment and I try to open it, I get an error that
"Firefox can't find the file at /tmp/img--46112.htm" The correct program opens
up but I always get the can't find file errors. If the message contains a URL
then it comes up and displays properly.
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem?

Fedora 11 GDM - unwanted list of all local users and impossible to customize?

Hello guys,
I did not use gdm for some time and now I'm not happy how it looks in Fedora
11.
First of all - the list of local users is unacceptable from security
reasons. Even if it supports such "an " option - how it can be the default
one?!
Second problem I have is shutdown button (and possibly restart as well) -
when you click on shutdown button by mistake, system will shut - there is no
confirmation dialog.
I also tried to find some ways how to customize gdm in Fedora 11 but I did
not find any usable guide.
Can anybody please advise me how can I have prompt asking for username only
(showing last logged user at maximum) and not displaying the list of all
local users?
Also can I somehow add confirmation or remove shutdown restart buttons from
gdm screen?
Or can you please advise any alternative to gdm?

SMS server/gateway

I am looking for a SMS server software for RHEL.
The phones we use can receive email but it does not always get to the phone
in a timely manner and sometimes I get "connected refused" when trying to
send messages via email. I've looked at smstools and Googled around but
would like the forums opinion on what they have used and experiences.

Local cache / 'repo' of updates and added RPM's

I had to re-install Fedora 10 on a home desktop PC. In regard to this:
Is it possible to have a local cache/ "repository" of all
1) Updates (Critical, Security, Bug-fixes), and
2) Additional installed rpm's (that were installed through PackageKit), e.g.
Opera, Adobe Reader, etc.
so that I do not have to download all those again (800 MB + D/L)
This would be similar to the 'aptonCD' package in Ubuntu (
http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/)
APTonCD is a tool with a graphical interface which allows you to create one

PPPoE over WLAN

Hi there,
the network at my university requires me to first connect to the WLAN
and then use PPPoE to actually use the intertubes. Connecting to the
WLAN itself works flawlessly (*hem*), the PPPoE though is a bit
troublesome.
I first tried setting this up via the DSL tab in Gnome's NetworkManager,
but that didn't work. The connection is listed (not very surprisingly)
under the wired networks, not under the wireless ones. I tried to be
sneaky and entered my wlan-adapter's MAC address in the "wired" tab,
but that only made the entry disappear from the network listing
entirely (in the menu that you see when you left-click the
notification icon).
I did manage to set up the connection by running pppoe-setup as root.
And although I did configure it to start at system boot, this doesn't
happen. So now I have to run ifup as root every time I want to connect
to the internet. To make things more annoying the WLAN connection
disconnects somewhat frequently (lousy administration), prompting me do
do ifdown and ifup each time that happens.
Any way to have this PPPoE connection up automatically, preferably via
NetworkManager? Any help is much appreciated.
