more on identifying the system a program is running on...
by Fred Smith
I asked recently about using /etc/redhat-release and got some useful answers.
My thanks to all who replied.
Now a slight variant:
Can anyone suggest some resource that a PROGRAM (compiled C program) can
examine while running to find out what platform it is runninng on ?
Things that come to mind include:
1. output of uname to see if the kernel version contains "elX" where X
is a digit, such as el4, el5, etc., identifying RHEL-4, RHEL-5, etc.
2. do the same thing by exmining the filename of the kernel (if I knew
how to find the file for the currently running kernel, that is.
can anyone suggest any other checks I could do?
Thanks again!

LTSP and DRI2, Fedora 12 and glxgears
by Norman Gaywood
I have a fully updated Fedora 12 ltsp-server-5.1.95-1.fc12.i686 setup
connecting to a fully updated Fedora 12 server.
A user logs in from a thin client and trys to run glxgears:
$ glxgears
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (DRI2)
Minor opcode of failed request: 1 (DRI2Connect)
Serial number of failed request: 18
Current serial number in output stream: 18
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
I've been googling for awhile on this problem and found others with the
same issue but never a clear solution. I'd even be interested to hear
someone say "It works for me".
Xorg.1.log from one of the thin clients can been seen here:

Trobleshooting Name Service Information
Each name service provides tool for acquiring information stored
within it. The problem is that it displays only information pertinent
to a particular name service without understanding of the influence of
/etc/nsswitch.conf on the real behavior of the system. To solve this
problem Selecting the correct In Solaris the getent utility provides
a generic retrieval interface to search several name service databases
in the order in which they are specified in/etc/nsswitch.conf.
Usage of the getent utility instead of service specific utilities like
nslookup, dig, ypmatch, etc can reduce troubleshooting time when
isolating name service malfunctions.

just Google for: fedora turn off ipv6
The first result will be:
http://www.g-loaded.eu/2008/05/12/how-to-disable-ipv6-in-fedora-and-centos/
Just follow the instructions in there (they are well written).

yum crash
by Jurek Bajor
Hi,
when executed by a non-root user, the yum entry crashes because it is unable
to access a database.
It should reject the entry for non-root user.
Jurek
Output:
[jb@localhost ~]$ yum history list all
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks, presto, priorities, protect-packages,
: refresh-packagekit
