Direction of Fedora desktop manager Gnome, related to complaints in OT morons thread
by stan
Hi,
Just thought I would make an observation about the direction of Fedora
after reading some of the comments in the OT morons thread, that has
morphed into grumbling about Gnome 3.
I was looking at the list archives
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/users/
for another reason and I noticed a trend that might be relevant. Five
years ago the gzipped text for a month of list traffic ran in the 4 to
5 MB range. Today it runs less than a MB.
Now, there can be many reasons for that:
- the traffic has been split to more specific lists
- people are using other means to get help, such as forums and chat
- Fedora has become so easy to use there aren't as many issues raised
- people are voting with their feet and deserting Fedora
If it is the last reason, that is troubling for the future. And it
begs the question of *why* people might be deserting Fedora. Is it
related to the sort of grumbling and dissatisfaction seen on the OT
morons thread? I know there is some truth for me in that. It
seems that the people doing the work want it to be trendy, in some
cases just for trendiness' sake, while I care more about stability and
functionality. That can also be viewed as making Fedora cutting
edge, and it is hard to argue with that. Perhaps Fedora is shifting
away from the sweet spot of my use, and I'll eventually have to look
elsewhere. From another perspective, I suppose it means I'm not
keeping up with Fedora. I can view that as an opportunity to change, I
guess.

[WAYYY OT] Begs the question
by Tom Horsley
From "Right to Die":
Whipple: "They think it has a basis, but it hasn't."
Wolfe: "That begs the question. I'll try again.
Why do they think it has a basis?"
Whipple: "Because I was there. Because she and I -
we were friends. Because she was white
and I'm black. Because of the billy,
the club that killed her."
Apparently Nero Wolfe is willing to make contact with
the expression "begs the question" :-).

automount messages from old system
by Raman Gupta
I often get these messages from automount in /var/log/messages:

source(s).

oldmount1/2/3 are NFS mounts from a machine that no longer exist since
the source machine was turned off. None of the /etc/auto.* files
reference these mounts at all, nor does /etc/fstab.
Even reboots have not helped -- oldmount1/2/3 have not existed for a
few months now.
Does anyone know how to "reset" automount to forget about these
obsolete values?

Managing fedora installations behind firewall
by andreas palsson
Hello.
Imagine a fairly large network, with from 50-100 workstations running Fedora.
Due to security, none of these machines have access to Internet.
Now to the question; how to keep all those machines up to date with the latest packages?
First, I imagine I have to set up a complete package repository.
Using the contents of the Fedora DVD should be sufficient?
Next, since the server is not connected to Internet either..
How do I keep the repository manually updated and synchronized with the official mirrors?
Last, how can I make a package which users can simply install to point their machines to update from the above mentioned server only, and remove the other install sources?
Thank you. :)

Hi,
Fix for TVTime not fixed in F14.
I sent the following post the Fedora Users list last September after the

How is it determined if a package needs to be rebuilt for a newer Fedora version?
by Richard Shaw
I see regularly where new(er) users wonder why they see packages
installed with dist tags from previous versions of Fedora.
I understand why this occurs but now that I've gotten into building
some of my own packages I started to wonder how it is determined if a
package needs to be rebuilt or not.
Do we rely on the package maintainer to make a call or is there some
definitive way to test a package?
Thanks,
Richard

You could research on how to retrieve the old src.rpm package contents from
cvs.rpmfusion.org (via anonymous access) and then rebuild the binary rpms
yourself. [ http://cvs.rpmfusion.org/viewvc/rpms/?root=nonfree ]

Re: Urgent help needed for rpmfusion catalyst 10.12 f14
by Zoltan Hoppar
HI,
I know that not really an open source advice, but I suggest to use the
latest radeon driver from the AMD site. First you have to remove these
kernel parts, and replace with the mentioned official drivers. I use
for my radeon HD 42xx the 10.12 run file. What you have to know, that
installer is capable to restore/regenerate the settings files for your
videocard, capable to run in commandline mode and even capable to
generate the distro specific rpm package (I don't recommend that,
because of the frequent updates, else you have to regenerate it by
each vga or xorg update). Additionally the official driver runs in
single user mode or single user networked mode what is supported by
Fedora. These setting are available through grub if you delete the
rhgb and the quiet option and enter the proper runlevel. For single
user mode enter 1, and for networked mode 3.
So, I suggest to use the .run file - and let it run in single user
mode, and the installer will setup for you the whole settings - it
takes time till the ncurses UI finish with the processing - but
luckily for the HD cards has a working proprietary driver.
If you need furhter help, mail me - I will tell you how to keep your
ATi card always on up to date.

Urgent help needed for rpmfusion catalyst 10.12 f14
by Peter Boy
Hello,
I have to use the rpmfusion catalyst driver for my ATI Radeon HD 3470 on
my F14 system because of a bug in the open source driver since f12 for
that specific model. The catalyst driver worked fine with version
kmod-catalyst-10.12-1 / xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-10.12-2.
But since an update (mar 19) to kmod-catalyst-11.2-1 /
xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-11.2 I encounter regular kernel crashes, the
panel crashes when I start audacious, and many other programms don't
work anymore, especially some devel tools I need for my work on an open
source cms project.
Unfortunately I couldn't find the old files
xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs-10.12-2.fc14.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-10.12-2.fc14.x86_64
anywhere on the web. I searched all mirrors, asked google without success.
Does anybody have those files at hand and can send them to my mail
address?
Thanks in advance

Can't use setkeycodes any more in Fedora 14
by Neil Bird
I have a not-that-old Logitech multimedia keyboard for which I have to
manually add some scancode-keycode mappings. Up till F12, I could happily
do that with a call to setkeycodes at boot-up.
Now I've updated to F14, however, setkeycodes is always erring with:
KDSETKEYCODE: Invalid argument
failed to set scancode 94 to keycode 189
[numbers e.g.]
FWIW, getkeycodes seems to report an empty table (although this might be
correct if no extra settings have been applied):
Plain scancodes xx (hex) versus keycodes (dec)
