F15 fails to suspend/hibernate on Thinkpad W510+
by Darryl L. Pierce
Whenever I try to put my laptop into either suspend or hibernate mode
(i.e., close the lid when not plugged in) the laptop _seems_ to be
trying to go to sleep but never quite gets there. The battery light
stays on, the sleep light (crescent moon) light blinks, but there's no
disk activity and the power light stays on.
And nothing short of holding the power button down and forcing a power
off works for bringing the laptop back out of htis state.
Any ideas on what I should or could do to get suspend to work again?
It's a PITA to have to hard shutdown the laptop when I accidentally shut
the lid.

Buttonless Touchpads
by Chris Tyler
Many HP (and perhaps other) laptops are now shipping with 'buttonless'
touchpads. There is a T-shaped line drawn on the pad dividing out two
'button areas' on the pad, but there is no physical button in each area.
Instead, the entire touchpad is sensitive (you can move the cursor
around even when your finger is in the 'button area') and the whole
touchpad is apparently hinged at the top and clicks a button at bottom.
Apparently the driver is supposed to:
- detect the button press and combine that with the touch position to
determine if the click should be interpreted as a left or right click
- enable multi-touch so that it can properly handle click-n-drag
However, in F14:
- a click anywhere counts as a left-click (even in the 'right-click
area')
- multi-touch doesn't seem to work (multi-finger clicks and
press-to-click-and-drag don't work)
- gpointing-device-settings can be used to enable drag lock, which helps
a bit, but no combination of settings seems to enable any click except
left-click
Questions:
- Is there a better driver (or group of settings) available?
- Is there any way to generate left- and middle-clicks on this type of
touchpad at this point in time?
(Additional info: HP model Pavillion dm1; touchpad does not show up in
'lsusb' listings (ps2 connection?)
Any help or pointers appreciated.

Re: tftp from home dir running under xinetd
by Marcos Ortiz Valmaseda
We need the /varlog/messages or the /var/log/audit/audit.log to see what happens on the system.
CC to selinux list too
Try to do this:
1- setenforce 0 to change to "permissive" mode
2- stop tftpd daemon:
# service tftpd stop
3- unload any rules that silently deny access
# semodule -DB
4- check the time:
# date
5- start the tftpd service:
# service tftpd start
6- Then, collect all the Access Vector Cache (ACV) denials that occured since you noted the system time. For example
# ausearch -m avc -ts 15:00
7- Filter the log and try to generate a policy module using audit2allow:
# grep "tftpd" /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M tftpd
8- Check the tftpd.{te,.fc} files, and if you have enough with it, you can install the policy module:
# semodule -i tftpd.pp
9- Then, check if the avc denials persists

tftp_anon_write --> off
I have set this bool to "on" via the selinux gui and it made no
difference. (Also, I am not not trying to write via tftp, just read.)
This is the error I see running with in full enforcing mode and it
occurs each time the remote host (a bdi2000 jtag emulator) attempts to
read its configuration file using tftp from the fedora box.
Jul 4 00:36:33 wally xinetd[6013]: START: tftp pid=6706 from=192.168.1.21
Jul 4 00:36:33 wally in.tftpd[6706]: /home/gene/my_dir: Permission denied
Jul 4 00:36:33 wally xinetd[6013]: EXIT: tftp status=66 pid=6706
duration=0(sec)
When I change just the tftpd process to "permissive" using the selinux
gui it fixes the problem.
Note: If I put the files read by the emulator in the "standard"
location, /var/lib/tftpd, it works OK in full enforcing mode.

F15 intermittent kernel dump with skge network driver for D-Link DGE-530T card
by Deron Meranda
I have a PCI network card that intermittently stops transmitting
traffic under Fedora 15, perhaps once every couple days. The network
traffic is not necessarily high when this randomly occurs, and usually
the machine is relatively idle.
Kernel: 2.6.38.8-32.fc15.x86_64
Driver: skge
Network card: D-Link DGE-530T gigabit PCI card, firmware rev 11
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H Rev 1.3
I do have multiple network cards, but all the others use the r8169
driver, and are seemingly unaffected.
To get the network working again, I either have to reboot, or if I can
unload (rmmod) and reload (modprobe) the skge driver then it will
resume operating again.
The kernel trace dump message is included below. I have tried to
research this and found a couple other reports over the past 6 months
or so of almost identical problems with this skge driver/D-Link card
combination - but unfortunately I could find no responses.
Does anybody have any idea what may be wrong (a driver bug, or just
bad hardware)? Or if there is anything more I can do to provide
information to anybody willing to look into this issue. Thanks.

Hello everyone,
I’m having problems with booting Fedora 14 X64 after I clone the hard disk with Clonezilla.
Disk imaging goes nices until it reaches the end, when it tries to reinstall GRUB on the target hard disk. It hangs, but I can boot that disk one time. Once the machine is restarted, I lose the boot loader.
Tried to repair it through Fedora Live CD following this guide - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=845741 -, but it hangs on “GRUB Loading, please wait…”.
Any ideas on why is this happening?
Thanks!

This is a bug with clonezilla since it uses grub 2 from debian testing:
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.sysutils.backup.clonezilla.live/1047
to remedy the problem you may use older version(s) of clonezilla or use alternative cd.

Good day,
Looking around to buy a new laptop.
Now I see some conflicting opinions on the lists between Nvidia and ATI.
Will be using Fedora and Ubuntu latest versions.
Now I am confused.
Kindly some advice please.

Thanks to all that responded.
I will test drive with live cd's at the shops.

Thunderbird 5

Just FYI, I downloaded Thunderbird 5 from Mozilla.com into ~/bin and
it's working just fine on F15. Unfortunately, not all Thunderbird
extensions are supporting the new version.
