This morning after booting the new kernel again, all is working; sound
is back. I have no idea what changed. I changed nothing!
Sorry for the noise.

Getting Video to work with Netscape (F14)
by Reg Clemens
OK, Im sure this has been covered a dozen times, but my scans of the
listdon't come up with anything.
I just recently brought up F14 on one machine.
Netscape is there, but when I go to watch a video from Netscape it tells
me
This CNN feature is optimized for
Adobe Flash Player version 10.1 or higher.
I push the buttons as requested, and Flash seems to be LOADED, but
not connected to Netscape. What do I do??? I remember a screen where
you had to set these things 'on' in a previous Netscape, but cant find
that screen in the current one.
Thanks in advance.

KDE backlight control - backlighthelper not running?
by Maciek Borzęcki
I'm seeing an odd issue with KDE and screen backlight control. I'm
running Thinkpad T60, with KDE 4.7 (from updates) and unfortunately
the backlight control does not work. Pressing Fn+Home/Fn+End does not
seem to have any effect. I normally have to tweak hotkey mask to
something like 0xffffff in order to have the proper key events appear,
and it does work but only in Gnome and Xfce.
Before anyone suggests reinstalling bash, I've already done it
(otherwise it wouldn't work in Xfce).
Looking at the logs:
- kded debugs:
kded(2495) PowerDevil::BackendLoader::loadBackend: Loading UPower backend...
kded(2495) PowerDevil::BackendLoader::loadBackend: Success!
kded(2495) KDEDPowerDevil::init: Backend loaded, loading core

kded(2495) PowerDevilUPowerBackend::brightness: Screen brightness: 0
<---- why is current brightness 0?
kded(2495) PowerDevilUPowerBackend::init: current screen brightness: 0
kded(2495) PowerDevilUPowerBackend::init: Can suspend
kded(2495) PowerDevilUPowerBackend::init: Can hibernate
kded(2495) PowerDevil::Core::onBackendReady: Backend is ready, KDE
Power Management system initialized
- messages - nothing about backlight helper being activated
- .xsession-errors - nothing related
Since it does not work with 4.7 from updates, I updated to 4.8 from
kde48 repo. Unfortunately, with similar results.
As a last resort I checked with KDE live spin, and amazingly,
backlight control works. So something between the current version of
packages and the one from live KDE spin, things got broken.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but looking at the code, I see that in order
to control the backlight, there's a helper program
(/usr/libexec/kde4/backlighthelper) which starts through dbus
activation, and exposes brigthness, setbrigthness methods. I take that
once started the demon should remain running at lest for some time.
Now in KDE spin, that happens to be the case, I can clearly see
backlighthelper process listed in ps output (there are also logs in
messages, that activation of backlighthelper was successful).
However, right now, no such log is to be found, as if for some reason
backlight helper does not get started.
Any ideas on how to proceed with debugging this?
Thanks,

Need help USB modem
by Roger
A friend of my daughter has converted from windows to Linux just
yesterday but has a Sierra Aircard 312U wireless USB modem and cannot
get internet on the laptop.
I've spoent hours googling to no avail. Search shows that this modem is
useless for Linux so can someone please tell me which wireless usb
modems work best on all linux flavours, easy to set up, etc.
There's got to be something but I haven't had any luck finding information.
If this change is successful there could follow at least 3 others so I
really need help here please.
Cheers and thanks in advance

sudo
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
With fedora 14 I cannot make sudo works fine.
sudo-1.7.4p5-2.fc14.x86_64
I edited /etc/sudoers (with visudo)B
I set:
user1 teucidide=/sbin/shutdown -h now
or
%wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL
user1 is member of wheel
user1 teucidide=/sbin/shutdown -h now
But every time I get:
user1 is not allowed to run sudo on teucidide. This incident will be
reported.
I also get:
teucidide : Mar 4 02:38:21 : user1 : no valid sudoers sources found,
quitting ; TTY=pts/3 ; PWD=/home/user1 ; COMMAND=/sbin/shutdown
/etc/sudoers has the correct rights.
/etc/sudoers.d is empty
What is wrong?

How to clean up Yum mess?
by Arthur Dent
Hello all,
Regular readers will know that I have just recovered from a kernel panic
on my F16 box. This was caused by an automatic update not completing
properly. I really don't like the new system of fully-automatic or
manual-only updates. I preferred the pre F15 method of informing you by
means of an applet when updates are available. Anyway I chose to go with
auto because I would probably forget otherwise and I kind of liked the
idea that the system would be kept up to date in the background. I now
see that this was a mistake because there is no mechanism for warning
you that updates are taking place. I presume I shut down the system
blissfully unaware that I was about to wreak havoc on it as updates had
only partially completed.
Running you manually it gave me a warning that there were unfinished
jobs, but when I allowed it to attempt to complete them it failed with a
message saying something like timestamp was different or something.
"yum check" shows the following:
# yum check

no sound after yum update of working FC16

This evening I did a "sudo yum update" which included a new kernel and
kernel headers. So I reinstalled the Nvidia proprietary driver

Many thanks for the response. I'm pretty sure a clean install from the
Live DVD (I've read that there were problems with the Live CD with 16)
would be feasible & not too painful but I think I'll put if on the back
burner for a while & see if anything occurs that warrants an update.
Also many apologies for the formatting of this email. Replying from
digest mode is horrible & between them Thunderbird & the mailing list
software mangle stuff.
Cheers,
Phil...
