Perhaps this exists already, and if not, it should...
by Fernando Cassia
I found myself on a command line window, wanting to open a PDF, and I
didnt remember the name of the pdf reader that now comes as a default
install for Fedora. Too many years of "just installing Acrobat" left
me with "./acroread whatever.pdf" engraved into my brain cells.
So.. I had to go to "add/remove programs" type "PDF" in the search
field, and then wait as the program showed the name of the app:
evince.
Now that's great. I now know its 'evince whatever.pdf'.
But that got me thinking. Shouldn't there be a "meta-command" like
"open filename.whatever" that just seeks the default file association
in gnome or whatever, and find the app name, and invoke the right app
without the end user having to memorize the exact app name associated
with any given file extension type?.
I'm not exceptionally bright, and my bright ideas more often than not
tend to be ideas implemented ages ago... so I guess that utilty might
exist already, no?

External eSATA drive not recognized on 2nd power up
by Patrick Lists
Hi,
I have an up-to-date F16 x86_64 box with 2 eSATA ports on the back
powered by a JMicron JMB362 chip. When I attach an external SATA drive
to the eSATA port and power up the drive it is recognized fine. But when
I power down that drive, wait 2 minutes, and power it up again the drive
is no longer recognized. Also there are no messages related to the 2nd
power up in /var/log/messages. All SATA controllers are set to AHCI in
the BIOS. No idea where to go from here. Anyone have any suggestions how
I can fix this?
Thanks and regards,
Patrick

I was suggesting that if either the browser or
the server does not know how to play nice,
the user might want to make a firm suggestion.
I've occasionally been annoyed by a text, not .txt,
file mime-typed application/binary or some such.

systemctl without privilege
by Frank Murphy
clamav-server installed using:
https://raw.github.com/csmart/naa/master/sysadmin/scripts/configure-clamd.sh
Am running clamd instance as user "clamav"
How can I get
the following to work as clamav,
or do I have to get user clamav
to join a privileged group?
--snips from freshclam.conf----
# By default when started freshclam drops privileges and switches to the
# "clamav" user. This directive allows you to change the database owner.
# Default: clamav (may depend on installation options)
DatabaseOwner clamav
# Send the RELOAD command to clamd.
# Default: no
NotifyClamd /etc/clamd.d/clamav.conf (same as clamd.conf)
# Run command after successful database update.
# Default: disabled
OnUpdateExecute systemctl reload clamd.clamav.service

named IPv6 errors (network unreachable)
by Braden McDaniel
My /var/log/messages is littered with entries like this:
Apr 14 01:11:41 knock named[900]: error (network unreachable) resolving 'dlv.isc.org/DNSKEY/IN': 2001:500:60::29#53
Apr 14 01:11:41 knock named[900]: error (network unreachable) resolving './DNSKEY/IN': 2001:500:2f::f#53
Apr 14 01:11:41 knock named[900]: error (network unreachable) resolving './NS/IN': 2001:500:2f::f#53
This is on a (Fedora 16) box where I installed and then uninstalled
FreeIPA; and possibly this situation has something to do with that. I
gather this has to do with IPv6 support; but I'm not sure whether I need
to enable IPv6 support somewhere, disable IPv6 support somewhere, or
where I should be doing either of those things.

I found how to do this in 16 but can't seem to find it in 15.... How do
I disable the resize hint box that pops up and tells you the size of the
console every time you resize it?
Thanks!

Changing the login screen background image in F16
by Fernando Cassia
I've looked around and can't find where the Gnome login screen
background image is stored. I want to set it to something different
from the default.
I'm not talking about the desktop wallpaper. as soon as I log-in it's
displayed fine. I'm talking about the background image when the OS
first boots and the Gnome log-in screen is displayed.
All the solutions that came up on Google were for Ubuntu and referred
to an Ubuntu-specific tweak tool. I looked in Gnome-tweak-tool and
couldn't find any option to change this...
Thanks

FYI: how to prevent mysql from oom-killer
by Reindl Harald
the following may be useful for most server systems
OOM-killer acts if some process reclaims more and more
memory and the kernel randomly kills unimportant tasks
using hughe memory
in case of a running mysqld the classification "unimportant"
is nearly all time wrong and can cause hughe damage and work
in other words: you really never want killed a database server
randomly instead "dbmail-imapd" which can be restarted via
systemd without pain and may be the root-cause of OOM
_________________________________________
with one single command you can protect processes from get killed
i started to run this every 15 minutes to make sure it is also
active after restarts
i am considering include this in "mysqld.service" as
"ExecStartPost=-/usr/local/bin/mysql-no-oom.sh" in our
internal mysqld-packages and include also the script
_________________________________________
[root@mail:~]$ cat /etc/crontab | grep oom
0,15,30,45 * * * * root bash /usr/local/bin/mysql-no-oom.sh
[root@mail:~]$ cat /usr/local/bin/mysql-no-oom.sh
#!/bin/bash
pgrep -f "/usr/libexec/mysqld" | while read PID; do echo -1000 > /proc/$PID/oom_score_adj; done
