3.5.[12] won't boot - GeForce GTX 285
by Sam Varshavchik
Does anyone have this NV5x-based video card, and can boot the 3.5.1 and
3.5.2 kernels, with nouveau?
The last kernel I can boot is 3.5.0. The two kernels that follow are hanging
for me, at the point where everything gets handed over to plymouth and
userland. I've waited long enough to be certain that things are really at a
screeching halt, and userspace is not coming up, blindly, behind the scenes.
I don't really have anything solid that points to the video card as the
culprit. It's just a hunch. 849341.

Connection Count -
by Bob Goodwin
The router on this F-17/64 bit computer runs DD-WRT. Under Status >
LAN > Active Clients there are columns for "Conn. Count" and "Ratio
[4096]." I am viewing that page on box7. When box9 [F-17/64] is
running Conn. Count increases from a one or two digit number to
three digits, e.g. 600, when I start Firefox it increases to four
digits, sometimes as high as 3000+. This problem just appeared this
morning and I have been puzzling over it for a while trying to pin
down the source, box9 is all I'm sure of.
When I run a different route running "Tomato" instead of DD-WRT I
can see a number of "dropped" entry's logged. The log function in
DD-WRT does not work ...
Whatever is going on it's worrisome, I do little "surfing" and have
no MS Windows. I have installed fail2ban in the last hour.
Any thoughts and/or suggestions?
Bob

Help with mke2fs
by John Wendel
I'm formatting a filesystem on a new 2TB disk. It will be used to store
video, so it will just contain a relatively few large files (200KB to
10GB). So, worst case, i need 10000 inodes.
First I used the option "-i 100000", this resulted in 20 million inodes
in the filesystem.
Next I used the option "-N 30000", this resulted in 238,000 inodes.
Is the math broken in e2fsck, or am I doing something stupid?
Thanks,
John

possible problem with scp/ssh/telnet
by Paul Allen Newell
Hello:
Up until recently, I have been able to scp/ssh from my F16 box to my
WinXP under cygwin without problem. Today, it appears that isn't the case.
Last "yum update" was 29jul12. Cygwin hasn't changed in months (once I
have something that works I am loathe to update as I don't really get it
well enough to ride a more bleeding edge)
I can ping both ways but can only scp/ssh from cygwin to F16 (though I
don't use it, I tested telnet and got the same results). I swapped in my
"log all problems" version of iptables on the F16 box and can see that
it is logging errors and I see the following:
+++
Aug 11 23:43:43 yoyo kernel: [ 779.725071] <IPTABLES: LOG REJECT>
IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:1e:8c:c3:21:d6:08:00
SRC=192.168.2.14 DST=192.168.2.255 LEN=229 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=128
ID=33554 PROTO=UDP SPT=138 DPT=138 LEN=209
Aug 11 23:43:48 yoyo kernel: [ 785.386501] <IPTABLES: LOG REJECT>
IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:1e:8c:c3:21:d6:08:00
SRC=192.168.2.14 DST=192.168.2.255 LEN=234 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=128
ID=33555 PROTO=UDP SPT=138 DPT=138 LEN=214
+++
I did a google but this information is pretty much Greek to me so I
didn't find anything because I didn't understand how to find something
My big question is "any suggestions?" There is a second minor issue
about is there a way to force iptables to immediately flush a message to
the log file as I had to wait about 10 minutes to get something.
Thank in advance,
Paul

Illegal question...
by Jack Craig
Donning flame retardant cloak, I have a question for the network
experienced...
After doing a non-fedora install of a like OS (but more community centric;)
, I find the network stack falls over if a user login on the console logs
out!
anyone ever seen seen such a weirdness?
I am not sure where to look for this and welcome any clues...

Start daemon with parameters
by Mark Haney
Somehow, I've managed to either lose the root MySQL password or type it
incorrectly. Either way, I can't use MySQL until I reset the password.
I've tried the mysql_safe init file way, but MySQL bombed (wouldn't
start). That might mean the package itself is buggered, but I know
mysqld starts fine.
Regardless, the other method to reset the root password is to start
mysqld with the --skip-grant-tables option. I'm used to just hitting
/etc/init.d/mysqld from the CLI and starting it that way. However, I've
noticed a distinct lack of an init.d/ directory in F17.
What's the latest method of starting a daemon manually and passing
parameters to it?

Fedora 17 - Unlocking LUKS encrypted LVM volume with key file
by Mateusz Marzantowicz
Is there support in Fedora 17 for unlocking encrypted LVM volume (which
acts as a container for my root, swap and other partitions) with key
file placed on SD/MMC card during system boot up process?
Currently I have to provide passphrase during system boot (standard
behavior), but I'd like to allow automatic unlock during power on/reboot
when I have SD card plugged in.
I've started to read some web pages and tutorials with different
solutions but I'm curious if there is a recommended way for doing this
in Fedora 17.
My current understanding of dm-crypt/LUKS on Fedora is that I need to
make some changes to dracut and udev in order to unlock encrypted
volumes using key files, but maybe something has changed in F17 and
there is an option to pass in grub/kernel/initrd command line to do this?

Nope, I have none of those problems, that I know of. My iMac is working
fine running F 17 except for the lack of sound when the headphones are
plugged in.
The music is playing back, I can actually hear it, just a little bit,
through my noise canceling headphones.
