Just A Question....
by EGO-II.1
I'm trying to "open" some files that have been mysteriously "locked" by
a WD Hard Drive. It was created and formatted by Windows, but I'm trying
to use Fedora to open them, can anyone give me some pointers on this?
I've tried the partitioning this drive and nothing on this system works
for it. I need help badly because the files on this drive are
crucial....HELP!
Gateway T6321 Laptop
Intel Pentium Dual CPU T-2390
Fedora 17
Kernel 3.5.2
Thanks In Advance!!

Unable to connect to scanner
by Don Levey
I have an HP OfficeJet Pro L7590 all-in-one unit. Until yesterday I was
able to use it to scan via xsane (and using that, in GIMP). As of
yesterday, however, I get the following error:
Failed to open device `hpaio:/net/Officejet_Pro_L7500?ip=192.168.1.128':
End of file reached
That is indeed the correct IP address, as confirmed on the unit itself.
It is reachable from my computer. It's not as if I can even get a
dialog or setup anywhere to choose or set up the scanner.
I do seem to get a command-line/console error on gnome-keyring; however,
I am using LXDE at the moment. That said, it is pointing to an
incorrect directory (/run/user/don/keyring-xxxxxxx/pkcs11 where the
xxxxxxx is incorrect). A correct directory exists. I don't think this
is the problem, however, as if I run xsane as root I get the same xsane
error but no gnome-keyring error.
I do have a ~/.sane/xsane/directory with xsane.rc, xsane.mdf, and
Hewlett-Packard:Officejet_Pro_L7500.drc, and while the files look whole
I really can't tell.
I an running F17 3.5.2-1 x86-64
xsane 0.998-10
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,
-Don

preupgrade F16 > F17: duplicate dhcp entry?
by sean darcy
I've got a running F16. The DHCP server gives it an address of
10.10.10.100 based on the MAC address. I'm trying to use preupgrade-cli
to upgrade to F17.
Preupgrade-cli works fine on F16. Then when I reboot into the upgrade,
it fails saying it finds a duplicate entry for the dhcp address of
10.10.10.100.
Same MAC. What's the problem?

duplicated f14 in prep for preupgrade to f16, can't login
by Jackson Byers
In preparation for trying preupgrade from my existing f14,
I duplicated the f14 on another partition.
This copy of f14 boots, boot messages all OK.
But I can't login to it,
either in the graphical login window
or going to text screen.
Both just endlessly recycle me back to the login.
I don't want to use the original f14 to preupgrade;
in case of preupgrade failure,
I could be stuck with no f16 and a damaged f14
thanks for
any hints,
advice.

efibootmgr triggers UEFI firmware problem
by Patrick Oltmann
Dear all
I recently used efibootmgr (0.5.4-12.fc17.x86_64) to inactivate a couple
of UEFI boot menu entries and change the default boot order on my
Thinkpad X220 (UEFI version 1.33). When I re-booted the machine
afterwards, the UEFI menu showed up with the desired entries and order,
however selecting the entries (both Linux and Win-7) only blanked the
screen briefly and then returned to the menu. After a long troubleshooting
session I found that the issue originated from the firmware's failure to
properly unlock the self-encrypting SSD (Intel 520 series), which makes
the drive (which holds the EFI partition) non-existent for the UEFI boot
loader. All the entries in the UEFI menu, especially the paths to and within
the EFI partition, were as far as I judge correct, so efibootmgr didn't do
anything that would have been obviously wrong.
Nevertheless, the question how efibootmgr triggered the firmware problem
still bugs me (the machine was running with the same hardware/firmware
configuration for 10 days before). I'm still in the process of getting familiar
with the concepts and implementations of UEFI, so I was wondering whether
there would any explanation for it.
Thanks & best regards

2nd monitor won't powersave
by Kevin H. Hobbs
One of my monitors does not enter any power saving mode.
Can anybody tell me where to look to figure out what's going on?
I have a Fedora 17 workstation with two acer x223w monitors connected to
a nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ using the nouveau driver.
I used to have Fedora 14 installed with nvidia drivers and both monitors
would enter a power saving mode.
I installed Fedora 17 with the minimal setting and then added KDE and
told systemd to use the graphical login.
Among the things I see with :
$ sudo cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -B 7 DPMS
are :

Thunderbird: get addons: Secure connection failed
by Joachim Backes
Hi all,
trying to get addons in thunderbird (14.0, Fedora17) gives an error
message:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Secure connection failed
services.addons.mozilla.org uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not
trusted.
(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)
This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be
someone trying to impersonate the server.
If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the
error may
be temporary, and you can try again later.
Or you can add an exception…
------------------------------------------------------------------
Anybody sees this too?
Kind regards

F17: How to always show desktop notifications?
by Marco Guazzone
Hello,
In GNOME, when you have "unread" desktop notifications come from a
specific source (e.g., empathy, mail-notification), all new
notifications from that source do not pop-up.
Instead, they are stacked up in the "unread notifications" place
(which appears as the envelope-like icon the systray area).
I don't like this. I just want every notification to pop-up (even if
there are already ones, coming from the same source, to be read) and
eventually to go in the "unread notifications" place.
Is there a way to get this?
Note, I don't use GNOME Shell. I use OpenBox as Window Manager
together with GNOME apps (gnome-settings-daemon,
notification-daemon,...)
Thank you very much!
Best,

I have a need to test network throughput for SMTP traffic on Fedora
and I'd like to configure postfix to accept incoming e-mail from
