weird xzcat behaviour
by Mark Haney
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I've been volunteered to try to build a boot image for a Nitrogen 6x
Freescale SOM board using whatever OS I can make work. I chose
Fedora's ARM image since I'm more comfortable with using Fedora. In
the process of trying to using xzcat to dump the image to the microSD
card I noticed something strange. When I tried:
sudo xzcat Fedora-Minimal-armhfp-20-1-sda.raw.xz > /dev/sdb
I would get a 'Permission denied' error.
But when I ran the same command as root directly, it worked just fine.
I'm not sure I've ever encountered a situation where sudo wouldn't
work like this before. Is there a particular reason for this? Or is
this a bug? For the record, I changed nothing on the device between
attempts to xzcat the image.

F20: fail to suspend with ext monitor, and backlight off
by Dave Mitchell
I've a laptop that was fine under F18, but since upgrading to F20 over the
weekend, now has difficulties with suspending, and with turning the
laptop's backlight on again.
The symptoms are:
On a freshly booted system, login, and where I *haven't* yet connected my
external monitor, closing and opening the laptop lid suspends and resumes
fine.
If I plug in the external monitor, wait a bit, unplug the external monitor
and wait a bit more, then from then onwards, closing the lid causes a
suspend followed immediately by a resume (i.e. with the lid still closed).
The second issue is that once suspend is broken, if I halt the machine,
power off (and even remove the laptop battery), then when I reboot, at a
late point in the boot process (where the Fedora teardrop/speech-bubble is
nearly full), the laptop's backlight turns off. At this point the laptop
becomes useless. Almost nothing I try will cause the backlight to come
back on; not mouse or keyboard activity, or Alt_Ctl-F<n>, nor suspending,
rebooting etc. (Well, rebooting gets the backlight on again during the
early part of the reboot, then it turns off again as before.) The only way
I managed to get it back on again was ssh-ing in from another host and
messing about with xrandr and xbacklight.
As regards the immediate resume after suspend, /var/log/messages shows
that both the suspend and the immediate resume are actually happening (as
opposed to it just not attempting to suspend, say):

The graphics are "Intel Ivybridge Mobile". (The laptop has an Nvidia too,
but I don't think its being used. And I've certainly never installed the
nvidia binary blob thing)

Fedora helps with taxes :-).
by Tom Horsley
My tax software has endless lists of financial institutions
it can import data from, and none of them are ever any of
my financial institutions :-).
So over the years, I've developed the habit of downloading
the PDF tax forms so I can at least cut & paste the correct
numbers with no transcription errors.
Lo and Behold, this year everyone seems to have discovered
the wonders of protected PDF files locked against cut & paste.
Sigh... :-(.
Enter the pdf2ps and ps2pdf tools on fedora! Convert the stoopid
protected pdf to postscript then the postscript back
to pdf and the furshlugginer protected flags are gone!
Now I can cut & paste again...

Steam on Fedora
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I'm not a gamer but I thought I'd check out the Steam engine on F20.
This is on the RPMfusion nonfree repo and installed with no problems.
However when running it I get a popup error saying:
OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems.
For more information visit https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9938-EYZB-7457.
A glance at the above URL reveals that the problem is probably due to
Steam being a 32-bit binary and I only have 64-bit libraries. I'm using
a GT630 video card with the NVidia proprietary driver (also from
RPMfusion).
Is this solvable without jumping through many hoops?

How do I select which monitor kdm will display login on?
by Robin Laing
Hello,
I have a dual monitor, well, one monitor and one projector that I have
configured for presentations. System is using F20.
Presently when I start the computer, kdm's login prompt is on the
projector instead of the monitor. There are no settings in the system
settings configuration to select the monitor.
The monitor order is selected for ease of use while doing the
presentations. When dragging applications to the presentation, you drag
towards the projector screen.
Even with the projector powered off, the kdm screen is on the projector.
I have played with the /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc with no success.
If I don't get this changed, some will force a move to MS Windows.
Thank you.

writing back... I ran RPMFUSION and rebooted no errors... The boot
screen is weird now its a blue bar that turns white as it goes across
the screen to the FEDORA 20 writing on the left in dark blue. then the
screen went black with a _ for about 10 sec. flickered. then log in
screen came up. So I guess this is solved! Thank you !
