shutdown machine from crontab
by Antonio Olivares
Dear folks,
I had a crontab entry to shutdown machine for a while. It had
30 16 * * 1-5 /usr/sbin/poweroff > 2&>1 /dev/null
and machine shutdown every weekday (mon-fri) at 4:30 pm. But I don't remember which fedora 19/20 the crontab entry (did not work as regular user but I had to use it as root user) now it seems to work by command line
$ /usr/sbin/poweroff
powers off machine. But if I leave the same command in crontab entry it(machine) does not poweroff. What could be preventing the machine from powering off? What should I try? I know that I can become superuser and add a crontab as superuser(root) and machine will shutdown, but how can I do it without being root? It used to work before via crontab, it did not 2 or three releases ago, now it seems to work from terminal, but not from crontab. Any ideas. Running Fedora 22 on machine in question.
Best Regards,
Antonio A. Olivares

Evolution and multiple kerberos tickets for GSSAPI authenticated email accounts
by Ranbir
Hi Everyone,
If I want to use Evolution for email and configure more than one email
account with all of them setup to use GSSAPI auth, how do I then get
more than one kerberos ticket? I tried to configure two accounts (same
domain), but Evolution complained a ticket for the second one didn't
exist. I can switch back and forth by destroying one and getting a
ticket for the other so I know GSSAPI auth works.
I read the kinit man page and noticed more than one cache can be used.
I think that's what I need to do for the above to work, but I don't
know how to automatically enable it. I also don'e know how to configure
Evolution to use something other than the default cache.
I've done some searching online and so far I haven't found anything.
I'm likely using the wrong search terms because there's no way no one
else hasn't tried this already. :)
Is what I'm trying nuts?

Basic forensics on fail2ban banned hosts?
by Richard Shaw
I'm looking for a tool that will look at the hosts banned by fail2ban and
do some basic metrics and forensics.
I looked at munin which gives a lot of really cool info on your system but
only reports the current number of banned hosts by fail2ban.
I would prefer something already in Fedora but if not, I'll see about
packaging it.
Thanks,
Richard

more external display woes...
by CS DBA
All;
I bought a new Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd generation, installed Fedora 21 and
neither the mini display port or the HDMI port work per an external display.
Installed Fedora 22 as well but it has the same issue.
Can someone help me debug this?
Thanks in advance

OT: SSD or not to SSD, that is the question
by Richard Shaw
I have two drives in my desktop computer, a 500GB for / and /var which is
failing, and a 1TB drive for /home and swap.
Cost is definitely an issue so I have narrowed my options down to a 1TB
drive for about $53 or a 256MB SSD for about $86.
Obviously the SSD is about half the size of my current failing drive. I
think I can squeeze things down a bit to make it fit and I REALLY want to
get an SSD.
With current reliability of MLC SSD's is it a good idea to put /var on an
SSD? The major users there would be BackupPC and all the chroots/cache for
mock packaging builds.
Thanks,
Richard

the wifi will not come on.
Yes, I know the kernel I mention above is a release candidate, but I
also tested released kernel 4.2.0
and it also does not support this wifi.

gnome embedded screencast tool unavailable after fedup to federa22
by panfei
After upgrading my fedora21 to fedora22 using fedup, I tried to record a
simple screen video by using the gnome3 embedded screencast (Ctrl + Alt +
Shift + R), After pressing the combined keys, the familiar red point
appears on the right-top of my desktop.
After 30 seconds passed, the screencast tool exited, this is expected. and
then I go to the Video directory, there is a webm video file there, but
the size of the file is zero.
is there any way to track what caused this issue and how to fix it ?
Thanks

dracut fails to build bootable initramfs on fc22
by Alex
Hi,
I have a fc22 system that's been working fine and now for some reason
kernel updates result in an unbootable system. It appears to be
related to dracut failing to build a proper initramfs image.
I have a default initramfs from 4.0.4-300 that works fine, but using
dracut to build a new initramfs during a kernel update or building it
manually fails. Rebooting the system only makes it to "Reached target
Basic System" where it just stops.
I really have no idea how to proceed, so I'd really appreciate any
ideas for troubleshooting this further.
Thanks,
Alex
