Possible timezone error on resume from hibernate
by Patrick O'Callaghan
My system hibernates and powers down at 1:30am, and is woken up by a
smart plug powering it on at 8am. This is working (touch wood) and the
system verifiably wakes up at 8am. However the journal logs of the
resume event show 9am, even though once fully resumed the time is
correct. The difference would appear to be due to summer time,
currently in force in the UK.
The hardware clock is set to Universal time (shown by 'hwclock -u') and
I assume the log entries at this point in the system resume are not
adjusting for timezone, hence the journal entries are incorrect.
Is this a known bug?

Anyone got RoundCubeMail installed happily in a host / VM / Podman
Container?
by phr
People,
I have been battling with this for a while - I have had an old version of
RCM working on old Fedoras and occasionally being updated but I thought
I would start with a clean install of F38 and the RCM RPM . . I can
sometimes get to the /roundcubemail/installer screen but can never get
the mains screen to display - and none of the logs seem to explain why .
. I have used PostgreSQL historically but even the Sqlite attempts
didn't work either . .
Any help appreciated . .
Thanks.
Phil.

Mount command for ext4 not accepting "--nouser_xattr" option
by Robert Nichols
I find that the mount command for an ext4 filesystem is not accepting the "--nouser_xattr" option, despite that being listed as a valid option in the ext4(5) manpage. This appears to be true in both Fedora 37 and 38. Note that the "--user_xattr" option _is_ accepted. When did this change? I have some external disks shared across multiple systems, and I want to keep them free of user xattrs.
Is this an error in the manpage, or a bug in the mount command itself?

fedora 38 cron zenity
by Joe Feely
I have a few little scripts that crontab runs. Well it runs the espeak
commands but no sign of it running the zenity bits
In crontab:-
0 * * * * ./Joe-drink-water-reminder
File Joe-drink-water-reminder contains:-
espeak -a15 -p25 -s160 "Hey, get Joe a drink of water"
zenity --info --title "Joe and water drinking" --width=850 --height=250
--text "<span foreground='blue' font='72'>drink</span>"
This works in a terminal with ./Joe-drink-water-reminder (including doing
the zenity command), BUT not when cron initiates it (it only does the
espeak bit).
This worked fine in f37 and earlier, just not f38.
Any pointers (I've "googled" it with no success)
Thanks,
Joe

F38 install fails on a Lenovo x120e - Failed to set new efi boot
traget
by Robert Moskowitz
this system had F22 on it.
I just went through all the steps to blow away the old partitions and
install F38.
It tried for maybe an hour with the spindizzy on "Installing boot loader".
If finally came back with a dialog box with an error of:
The following error occurred while installing the boot loader. The
system will not be bootable. Would you like to ignore this and continue
with the installation?
Failed to set new efi boot target. This is most likely a kernel or
firmware bug.
No|Yes
What should I do at this point. It IS an old system that has had a
number of ver of Fedora on it. It was booting F22 just fine, it seemed
but now it is all gone...

mariadb missing install file
by Mike Wright
I've received enough questions about WordPress that I've decided to
explore it.
I created an F38 virtual and pulled in mariadb, httpd, and wordpress.
mariadb doesn't depend on the other two so I decided to start there.
There is supposed to be a file that creates the db's system files, sets
an admin and its password, etc. From mariadb-10.5.2 onward it's called
"mariadb-install-db". That file is missing in the rpm for 10.5.20
(latest for f38).
2 questions:
Is this a fedora packaging bug or does it come from elsewhere?
Does anybody know if there is an alternate method to initialize the
mariadb?
Thanks for any help,
Mike Wright

HP EliteBook vs. Linux
by Michael Hennebry
Is Fedora useable on an HP EliteBook 840 G3?
I have the impression that that is an essay question.
The specs list 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB C ports.
The labeling on the images show
1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 charging
1 USB Basic type C
1 USB 3.1 Gen 1
My guess is that the charging "port" is not really a port
and is just good for charging things.
Correct?
I also guess that the USB Basic type C port is the USB C
port and one of the 2 USB 3.0 ports.
Correct?
Also listed is 16 GB of RAM that is shared with the video.
Any idea how much memory is shared with the video?
