They may be relevant if they remove KMS, which apparently AMD requires.
I've removed them in any case and rebooted, but it doesn't seem to make
a lot of difference.
KMS isn't really something you can remove, except maybe by recompiling
the kernel. It's an interface that the various graphics drivers use.
