Most USB adapters hide the underlying architecture. smartctl knows
about a number of USB adapters, so the first thing is to do an "lsusb"
as root and look at the make and model of USB adapter you have. Then do
a "man smartctl" and see if the make/model is listed in that man page
under the description of the "-d" parameter.
If you see that, (as root) try:
smartctl -x -d <name-of-USB-device> /dev/sdb
I happened to have two USB hard drives:
[root@prophead ~]# lsusb
...
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0411:00a2 BUFFALO INC. (formerly MelCo., Inc.)
Bus 004 Device 005: ID 0bc2:ab21 Seagate RSS LLC Backup Plus Slim
...
And neither are on smartctl's "-d <type>" list. I tried all of the
"-d"
options and the one that worked for both devices as the "usbsunplus", so
I can get all the data via:
smartctl -x -d usbsunplus /dev/sdb AND
smartctl -x -d usbsunplus /dev/sdc
Your mileage may vary. There is no guarantee this will get you any data
that's useful since there is no direct connection to the drive itself.
