Most major distros seem to providing KDE 3.5 as an alternative to
KDE 4.x. There's no need for both to be installed at the same
time on the same system (which would be hard).
Look closer, I'll be pleasantly surprised if those "most major distros"
didn't do it as I described (allowing for parallel-installability). I listened in on
some of their ml/irc discussions, but perhaps they chose to implement it differently since
then. *shrug*.
