I have the same symptom on my box. Since yesterday I am unable to access
Gnome (not even as root), though KDE works fine. Any ideas from the
experts?

Hi Michael,
Not really an answer here, But I must comment,
I had the same problem using synaptic. where it actually un-installed
gnome to satisfy deps and never put it back! I did post about it a while
ago.
