In such cases I'd certainly try to boot the computer with some Live
system (Fedora, Debian, whatever) - to come closer to know whether
it's actually a hardware problem or a problem with the installed
system ...
As mentioned in another sub-thread, I got it working by disabling the
IGP via the BIOS. I'd still like to make this more dynamic by
blacklisting the IGP at boot, but haven't managed this yet. It doesn't
seem to be enough just to put i915 among the blacklisted modules.
