That is the exact same behaviour I've experienced. I have not yet found a solution.
Which version did you build from source? I've tried to build both 21.4.14 and 21.5.16
without success.
To fix your problems with the buttons, etc. you may want to read through configure.usage.
There are a number of options in there related to that.

Dear Mitch,
I switched to Fedora this week and experience the same
troubles. I sent a gdb core file report to the XEmacs
people but they told me to report to the Fedora people
and that I should create a bug report from XEmacs
within :(
I only see "Garbage collecting done..." in the status
and then it crashes and leaves me with a core file.
Did you find any solution? I suspect there are some
configuration settings left but I'm just half the
Linux user I use to be w/o XEmacs but I'm not an
expert on its architecture.
Meanwhile I tried to compile the XEmacs and it fits
now perfectly into the GNOME environment but I can't
do a lot of things who require clicking on the buttons
or menu items.
Today I will find out if I have more luck with the
latest development version.
Please let me know if you have any solutions on that
matter.
Kind regards from Freiberg, Germany,
Thoralf.
