check the files under ~/.mplayer. you should have a 'config' file and a guiconfig. in the guiconfig (if there) look for a line 'vo_driver = "??"' make the ?? (probably is vo, but whatever, change it to "xv". if no guiconfig, go ahead and make one, it couldn't hurt if no go make the config file instead and put the 'vo_driver = "xv"' in there
Alternately, you could start gmplayer from menu or command line then right-click in the video window and select preferences and select the xv video output. Whichever you like. you might want to read the docs that came with mplayer. there are a TON of options (ok so some aren't very interesting), but you could play for months with all that mplayer can do.
