AFAIK this is the procedure I should follow.
backup
Boot to single-user
use parted
rm partitions 2 3 4
resizepart partition 1
reboot
Do I have it right?
That will get you a single large partition, but your filesystem won't
be any bigger until you grow it to fit the new size. Different
filesystems have different ways of doing this.
