As long as NM doesn't grok all possible settings from the ifcfg scripts,
it's not exactly a seamless replacement. There are also probably lots
of scripts using ifup/ifdown to handle ppp and pppoe connections on
router machines. These commands may be replaced with newer variants,
but they must not go away.
"must" is an interesting verb. :)
I wouldn't be surprised if the ifcfg scripts are deep-sixed by the
time we reach the Fedora release that'll be the base of RHEL 8.
If there are ifcfg settings that network understands but
NetworkManager doesn't, file a bug report or get ready to use a
keyfile under "/etc/NetworkManager/system-settings/" (check "man
nm-settings" for keyfile settings). The transition away from network
will be less of a challenge and less of a headache than the
transitions to systemd and Gnome 3, to name two.
