You can try it or rebuild own packages.

I was able to build cdrecord and it also kept insisting on recording at 10X.
I suspect it is the Sony CD-R media that may be the culprit as it may be
"coded" to support only 10X.
I know that my drive supports multiple speeds <= 24X
