What kind of computer is this? The models I'm aware of that have an
integrated camera-microphone device are new Dell laptops. These need an
option passed to the sound device's kernel module. My Latitude E6410
needs /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel.conf containing
options snd_hda_intel model=dell-s14
Other models need other model= values. See

The microphone was ok after this.
