is there a safe way to shrink?
The only safe way to shrink is to have a backup. Shrink is I/O intensive
and has
a much higher probability of revealing any weaknesses in hardware or
software
than normal operations where weaknesses may remain undiscovered for a long
time. Also note that running a filesystem with too little free space slows
down
file operations and also increases the probability that weaknesses will be
revealed.
