Another one here: I've got exactly the same problem on a laptop using
the snd_intel8x0 driver. First I thought it was about Rhythmbox not
processing the cpu speed changes (speedstep) correctly, but since then
I've found out it happens without speed changes too.
I think you're right it's when the CPU load spikes.
It's happening in XMMS too, but with different results (sound goes silent).

My current guess is it's a bug in the sound driver.
Please post your sound card details (and lsmod output, I'm interested
which driver you use).

What I found when I used the hardware browser program (typing "lsmod"
gave a "command not found" error message, though the man page for it is
present...):
