community, but the news is that some people DO NOT

It's because of the widespread prevalence of this sort of attitude
amongst Windows users that viruses and other forms of malware are such a
big problem in that environment. I'm afraid you're unlikely to find much
support for your suggestion in the Linux world, though there is *some*.
The "Linspire" distribution defaults to having users run as root, so
permissions aren't going to get in your way there. You might want to
have a look at that.

Then Windows is the OS for you. *nix systems have ownership rules. There's
no way around it. The best you can do is set your system up with flexible
ownership rules, but you can't simply drop them. You wouldn't want to. If
you did, then you don't want to use Linux. What you're asking for is like
wanting to breathe without having to inhale the stupid nitrogen that comes
with the oxygen.

Good point; though it's been so poorly implemented in 2K and XP that I keep
forgetting it's there. I haven't been able to get a single 2K or XP machine
working properly under a non-admin account, so I haven't even tried for a
couple of months. But I'm much happier with Linux and its ownership rules
anyway.

getting proper security features regarding file ownership and access
permissions. And its going to get much more complex than it is now very
soon as both Lin and Win platforms are beginning to use ACL's.
ACL's are much more flexible and, therefore necessarily much more
complex.

No, its simply very ignorant and universally recognized as such in all
mature computing platform environments, including windows. Ask any
sysadmin.

And thirdly, I'm not blaming the rules, and it's not a
case of I can't handle permissions, rather that there
is no simple option to drop the permissions (actually
there is if you want to read constantly for 3 days
without sleeping!).
File permissions are usually covered in about 15-20 minutes in any
introductory UNIX class (and frequently even less since any person with
a real computer since degree is already very familiar with the
concept). What you want is "chmod -R 777 <root of mount>" and you will
get what you want.
FAT32 partitions DO NOT USE permissions, that is one
thing I like about them, however Fedora tries to force
it's fascist regime on it and screws things up.
Mind boggling. One of the most flexible computing platforms ever
implemented is "fascist". I hereby invoke Goodwin's law:

One simple line in the main init file like:
More ignorance. You need to stop relying on your past windows
experience and concepts. They do not have a one to one mapping in the
UNIX environment.
It would solve 2 problems:
1. It makes Linux boot in "Friendly Workstation" mode,
no passwords, no UID GID crap, and no security (which
a user can add later if he/she wishes). and..
2. It makes the Linux dweeb feel like they have
something larger than a cocktail frank in their pants.
I mean, aren't computers supposed to make life easier?
The kernel source (and all the other source) comes with your system.
Just code it up, build the new kernel and boot it. No doubt your
version will become the most popular and widely used of any Linux
distribution. Congratulations.

whole purpose if you ask me.

People like you leaving the list don't make much of a difference. Its better
to have lazy and cowards out who take everything for granted without even
trying to read plain english.
Your problem had only one option required to work. FAT32's can be mounted
with the 'umask' option.
umask=0000 would have solved your problem.

Sorry, guy (you who started this thread), that you are frustrated with the
permissions and yur inability to get them to do what you want. I did not
follow your thread from the beginning, so I do not know what your specific
concern is. However, I can talk about my own experience, which might help
you along the road to understanding.
When I began, I also had some difficulties getting it set up - by default -
to do what I wanted, which in my case was full access for ME, as it is MY
computer and ALL of the data is MINE. Period.
Well, a long time of fiddling and chmod-ding the permissions of files
finally lead to an understanding of the setting of a default umask in
/etc/bashrc and my problems have vanished.
I had to go back and correct the permissions of the existing data, but all
new files created now automatically have the permission I want and I feel
that my data is secure.
I created a guest account on my system to verify this. I cannot look at the
material in guest and guest cannot get at my stuff, but both of us can use
the data (the cliparts, mp3, etc).
I am not sure what yu are/were trying to achieve, but this has worked very
well for me after a bit of perseverance, learning and fiddling. And I feel
my data is secure and I can allow a guest to use my system without me having
to worry that he might accidentally delete my music files, for example.
Permissions allow you to do all of this.
