Hi everyone,
The printer I have, a BJC-255SP, can only be either on or off; there's
no standby mode which some printers have. Therefore, as pointed out by
Tim Waugh, if the printer is not on when I boot up, kudzu won't detect
it and the OS (as seen in Hardware Browser) won't know about it and thus
printing won't work. My point is, if I forget to turn the printer on
before I boot up then once Fedora is loaded and I suddenly want to print
something, I'll have to resort to rebooting with the printer on this
time and then I'm finally able to print..As you can imagine, this is far
from ideal..
My question is, is there a way to get kudzu to detect the printer once
the OS is already loaded or will I always have to reboot?

I recently posted a message asking about exactly the same behavior in
relation to modems (kudzu --class=MODEM). I don't understand this and
no one responded with an explanation. I remain confused.

That makes sense. However, why is it that you can only detect a printer
(maybe the case with other hw?) when booting up? Limitations in how you
can talk to the printer hardware? If I run 'kudzu -s' from a VT once
Fedora is loaded up, it returns with nothing. I think I should be able
to turn my printer on after the fact and *then* run kudzu and get it
added to hwbrowser. What are the current technical difficulties of doing
this? Note, as I've already stated previously, printing still works
without the printer listed in hwbrowser, so this is more a
consistency/aesthetic issue.

Ok, again, that makes sense to me. Heh, you're really clearing the
cobwebs for me here! Well, my next logical question would be
understanding the correlation between kudzu and hwbrowser. Doing a
'kudzu -ps' indeed doesn't show the printer config, and I believe this
is what hwbrowser does when it's "searching for devices"? Would it not
be unreasonable for to, after probing with kudzu, to also check (diff)
this output with what's in the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf DB? That way, even
if the printer wasn't probed and detected on boot, it could still be
listed in hwbrowser.

I would accept this if it was happening just to printers. But my
experience with modems indicate that your expalnation does not hold.
In my case also kudzu on the initial boot recognised that the modem
had changed. I said to keep the configuration and it is in
/etc/sysconfig/hwconf. However, kudzu is not triggered by further
boots, nor by my removing the modem information from the data base.
The seriel port is certainly not used by another program when I
reboot. So my conclusion is tha for external devices like printers and
modems kudzu does not work properly.

Do you tell it to remove the printer entry when you boot up with it
powered off?
I'd *guess* that if you turn it on, all you have to do is restart
cups.

Hi Bill,
After a restart of cups it works now w/o having to reboot with it turned
on! Great. :-) I always select "Do Nothing" when prompted by kudzu.
Should I select "Keep Configuration" instead to stop kudzu asking this
question every time I boot with printer off? Which would be better?

hwbrowser does a fresh probe, it doesn't read from the config.
