Dear All
When trying to run gmplayer, I get the error below. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

check the files under ~/.mplayer. you should have a 'config' file and a guiconfig. in the guiconfig (if there) look for a line 'vo_driver = "??"' make the ?? (probably is vo, but whatever, change it to "xv". if no guiconfig, go ahead and make one, it couldn't hurt if no go make the config file instead and put the 'vo_driver = "xv"' in there
Alternately, you could start gmplayer from menu or command line then right-click in the video window and select preferences and select the xv video output. Whichever you like. you might want to read the docs that came with mplayer. there are a TON of options (ok so some aren't very interesting), but you could play for months with all that mplayer can do.

Thanks, Scott. I have found a file called gui.conf under ./mplayer directory. Therein, I have replaced the line
vo_driver = "xvmc"
with the line
vo_driver = "xv"
but no progress regarding the reported problem.

Paul, I re-read your original message and found the lines: vo_xvmc: No X-Video MotionCompensation Extension on :0.0 Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
which sounds like possibly a problem with the video driver for your graphics card. Do you still get this error with the new vo_driver?. Just for giggles, if you read the mplayer docs, there is command-line options for mplayer (non-gui) that allow for many esoteric and not very useful video outputs such as ascii, I would try some of these. Also, I had assumed, but does mplayer or gmplayer work on any video, or is it just this one causing the grief?

Thanks, mplayer works fine with any video file; the reported problem is only with gmplayer.
