I've done this to myself a few times. Using fdisk to rewrite the partition type brings consistency (and automountability) without destroying the data on my usb drive.

Yes, that should do it, though I don't want it to automount. Another issue with automount is that sometimes it shows up as /dev/sda1 and sometimes /dev/sde1
I am aware of udev, and prefer not to install it.
